Deidre: National champion!
Congratulations to M’Chigeeng’s Deidre Debassige who, along with her “AA” Midget Sudbury Lady Wolves squad, won the 2015 Esso Cup as the top Midget squad in Canada! The team edged the strong, hometown Red Deer, Alberta side 2- 1. Deidre and the Wolves even got some serious screen-time on Sunday’s Hockey Night in Canada as Don and Ron acknowledged the huge accomplishment. This caps off an astounding season for Deidre and her stalwart defense play. Way to go Deidre!
Mustang Gymnastics!
On Monday, April 20, the MSS Gymnastics team travelled to Sudbury to compete against 13 other schools at the NOSSA Gymnastics Championship. The team performed admirably, with several girls qualifying for OFSAA, and the team as a whole placing fourth out of 14 schools.
The top ten results were as follows: In level 1, Victoria Tardif won gold on vault and Sabrina Bondi won bronze, on vault qualifying both of them for OFSAA individually in that event. Victoria also placed 8th all-around in level 1, and Sabrina placed 9th all-around. The level 1 team (Victoria, Sabrina, Kaitlynn Tomaselli and Alyssa Green) placed third overall. In level 2, Yohana Ogbamichael placed 7th on beam, 9th on bars and 10th on vault. The level 2 team (Yohana, Jadah McGraw, Eden Beaudin, Roxanna Rojas Brizuela and Captain, Jill Cooper) placed second overall. In level 3, Maggie McDonald placed 9th on beam and 10th on bars. In addition, the Novice Aerobic Gymnastics team (Yohana, Roxanna, Alyssa, Kaitlynn, Eden and Jill) won gold in their division, also qualifying them for OFSAA. Coaches, Heather Theijsmeijer and Jill Ferguson are extremely proud of these girls’ accomplishments over the season. Well done and good luck at the OFSAA, Victoria and Sabrina!
Sault 3 on 3 results!
Congratulations to the Manitoulin Buckshots (type-casting much!) who won the Bantam house-league division of this past weekend’s 3 on 3 up in Sault Ste. Marie. The squad was part of some 17 Manitoulin teams who showcased their skills of the unique format out of a total of 170 squads!
The Buckshots, clad in ’hunter green’ no less, had a very exciting path to their victory. For instance in their championship game they were behind 3 – 1. However in this set-up, game penalties become penalty shots after regulation. Manitoulin had three penalty shots to take, the opposition: none! In dramatic fashion, Hunter Cranston and Kaleb Blackbird scored to tie it up at 3 apiece and sending the decision to a sudden-death, shoot-out. Netminder Alex Ingraham stone-walled all shooters into the third round when Manitoulin’s Matt Redmond sealed the deal with a gold -medal goal.
Congratulations to Chris ‘McLovin’ Haner, Matt ‘Duster’ Redmond, Ethan ‘Bender’ Smith, Trinity ‘Blondezilla’ Leeson, Kaleb ‘Blackness’ Blackbird, Sean ‘Orford’ Orford, finally, Hunter Cranston, Keegan Clark, Wyatt Dearing and Alex Ingraham were Things: 1, 2, 3 and 4! Hats off as well to coaches Brent Leeson and Rob Dearing as well as Manager Lori Leeson.
One other team I was able to ascertain results for were the Atom Manitoulin Rink Rats who owned the house-league division, going 5 wins and no losses…until, that is the championship game. All in all it was a great experience for the following top-notch squad. Congratulations to: Brett Mastelko, Whittier Gauthier, Riley Lockeyer, Jared Cortes, Jared Toope, Ethan Dey, Todd Gordon, Jenna Taylor, Cord Hughson and Aysia Debassige. Hats off as well to Coaches, Jay Toope and Jason Hughson and Manager Tanya Hughson.
MCBL ready for registrations!
It is heartening to see that the Mindemoya Children’s Baseball Club is set for another season thanks to another strong crop of volunteers. They are having their main registration, tonight, Wednesday, April 29th at the library in Mindemoya. The cost is just $25 and includes a club t-shirt! Try to get to the library from 6:30 to 8:00 tonight, otherwise please give Suzanne White (377-4163) or Carrie Spry (377-4288) to reserve your spot. Thanks once again to those volunteers who are keeping this important event running.
Early Canoe, kudos
When the young or young-at-heart people have barely stopped posting videos of themselves and their snowmachine escapades, it is great to see some teenagers involved in an early spring ritual, more along the traditional lines of excitement. Four 16-year-old lads who only thought they might have open water due to online satellite pictures went ahead with their annual canoe trip. Congratulations to David Scott, Daniel Chapman, Liam Leblanc and Max Chapman on their old-school, Canadian, adrenalin-rush!
