The Mustangs are officially on March Break! Students are relaxing at home, teachers are catching up on sleep, and everyone is super happy with the weather. On Friday, March 13, the school had a Winter Carnival and everyone participated in one of the many activities. Out on the lake students were sitting on cushions relaxing in the partial sun. In the music room, the teachers sang Uptown Funk for all of the students watching. Sisters Jessica and Kenra Jordison won matching Mustang shirts for singing so beautifully. There was a free hot dog for everybody, and also marshmallows that students could roast at the bonfire. There was a road hockey tournament in the parking lot. There weren’t any fish caught in the ice fishing derby, but everyone had fun and that is what matters. Participants could win coupons for MSS spirit wear.
The winner of the huge skittles jar was Karissa Merrylees, and she was very proud of herself. The winner of the green skittles jar was Courtney Oswald the purple jar was Kendra Jordison, the yellow jar was Skyler Danville, the orange jar was Jade Danville, and the red jar was Jordan Moore. These lucky guessers got lots and lots of candy! The colourful clothing brightened both the school’s halls and the students’ moods.
Thursday, March 26 is a Parent/Guardian Night at MSS from 7-9 pm. Parents will have the opportunity to speak with their child’s teachers. There is going to be a bake sale during the evening so that parents can enjoy a snack while they wait their turn for a conference.
Over 120 students, mostly Grade 10s, are certainly anxious to write the annual Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test on March 26. Months of practice and tips from teachers will conclude with final tutorials after March Break. Because the literacy test is a graduation requirement, students will put forward their best effort in order to pass the test on their first attempt. Students need at least Level 3 to pass the test, and they will not receive their results until June.
Spymaster sign up is done! All of this generation’s spies have chosen their names, taken their target pictures, and are now preparing for the major hunt down by researching explicit techniques and strategies.
Friday was the last day for awesome First Nation’s counsellor Mrs. Gordon as she moves onto a new position. She will be missed by a lot of students and I am sure she will visit. It was also Mrs. Debassige’s last day of her placement with Mr. Roy, and we hope to see her back at the school soon.
All three of the computer labs have been renovated and updated by Mr. Gray. There are new computers and a new layout that is more suitable for students who bring their own devices. There is a table in the middle of each lab where students can meet with the teacher or sit and work on their own technology.
The last week before March Break was pretty busy, and the weeks to follow will be packed with education and fun. ‘Til next time! Stay golden, Mustangs.
