Getting into the final stretch of first semester, Mustangs are on edge. Culminating tasks are (mostly) submitted and students are studying in preparation for the quickly approaching exams. Buses will be running on their regular schedules. Some students can earn exam exemptions with excellent marks and excellent attendance. If buses are cancelled for some reason, the exams scheduled for that day will be postponed until the next day.
The school musical is approaching fast! The show dates are February 12, 13, and 14. Tickets will be going on sale soon or you can buy tickets at the door. The cost is $15 for adults and $10 for students. Costumes are coming together, hairstyle ideas are popping onto heads, lines are falling out of mouths and music is flowing from the instruments of the band.
The boys’ basketball team did an awesome job playing against Elliot Lake Atoms! The boys’ and girls’ hockey teams are doing their best and making their way up the rankings in the standings. Girls’ volleyball is doing very well and practicing hard for their next tournament.
Crossfit has started up again, and the new crossfitters are expected to pull their own weight. The intermediate cross fitters are showing the younger ones the ropes and everyone is enjoying the intense workouts. Shanelle Abott, a first timer, says “Crossfit is crazy hard, but it is a lot of fun.” New students are encouraged to join up and push their potential.
The Royal Canadian Legion Public Speaking competition is coming up as well, and if students are interested in participating in presenting a speech this year, they can sign up in the Guidance Office. All drafts of speeches are due to Mrs. Marshall or Ms. Bauer by February 3. Grade 9 students will compete against Grade 7s and 8s in Gore Bay on February 26 at 7 pm. Grade 10-12 students will compete on February 10 at Manitoulin Secondary School at 1 pm. Our school proved itself as a speaking powerhouse when last year Alexis French was the provincial champion. Everyone is encouraged to help our school carry on a championship tradition.
Getting ready for second semester may prove to be stressful for everyone, but it is a normal part of high school, and getting through it makes you stronger. ‘Till next time. Stay golden Mustangs!
