Did you know that your brain has “more connections than there are stars in the Milky Way?” This according to Dr. David Perlmutter, an American neurologist and nutritionist. His book, ‘Grain Brain: the Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs and Sugars – Your Brain’s Silent Killers’ gives us the lowdown on what happens to our brain as it is constantly bombarded by the foods we eat. Perlmutter explains the links between too many carbohydrates and major health issues, such as dementia, ADHD, epilepsy, anxiety, chronic headaches, depression to name a few. This is a book that is full of practical advice on how we can take control of our own wellness and health. A really interesting and inspirational book!
‘A Victorian Flower Dictionary’ by Mandy Kirby is a beautifully illustrated look at the history, origins and cultural importance of flowers in our lives. For example: chrysanthemums stand for truth, daffodils for new beginnings, daisies represent innocence and so on. This is a lovely book for gardeners and romantics alike.
‘The Language of Flowers’ by Vanessa Diffenbaugh is a novel that captures the essence of emotional expression through flowers. This is an outstanding first novel by this writer—spinning an almost magical tale that resonates with an enchantingly genuine passion. It is an extremely satisfying and sensitive read!
“It’s never too late to start over” is the theme of the novel, ‘The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared.’ This is a work by Swedish author Jonas Jonasson. The story takes the reader on a fast-paced adventure with its centenarian hero. It is fanciful and funny with its own brand of wisdom, charisma and delight. It is one of my favourite reads of 2014!
Teen Picks: ‘13 Gifts,’ ‘Finally’ and ‘11 Birthdays’ by Wendy Mass.
DVD Pick: ‘12 Years a Slave’ starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Lupita Nyong’O and Brad Pitt—a powerful movie based on a true story.
