MANITOULIN—The Manitoulin Secondary School Mustang boys’ hockey team is off to a good start in 2015 with one win, over first place Notre Dame, and a one-goal loss to second place Confederation.
The Mustangs beat the Notre Dame Alouettes handily in front of the hometown crowd Friday night in Little Current 5 to 1. Coach Brad Bond commended his entire team on playing exceptionally well, from forwards, defence to goaltending and including all three lines.
On Monday, January 5, the boys’ first day back at school, the Mustangs travelled to Sudbury for their first game after the Christmas break, losing to Confederation 2-1. The ‘Stangs had some near misses, hitting the crossbar, and Coach Bond gave a nod to Confed’s goaltending. He noted that all of the Mustangs losses this season have been by one goal, and with Friday night’s game under their saddle, the team knows they can beat any team in the Sudbury District and beyond.
For the remainder of the season the Mustangs will play only the top ranked teams, of which they are now a part.
The Mustang boys play in Little Current this Friday, January 16 at 7 pm against Lockerby and are asking the Island community to come cheer them on.
“We certainly feel we can make NOSSA (the Northern Ontario Secondary School Association) playoffs this year, but it’s up to the boys,” Coach Bond said. “We’ve got to keep winning to keep playing.”
