The beauty of its people shines through the faces and selfless acts of amazing people
To the Expositor:
I would like to share with you my experience surrounding a recent tragic incident. An unfortunate car accident has helped to remind me of the beauty of Manitoulin Island. Not of the natural beauty that is obvious to all, but of the special beauty of the people that inhabit the towns and villages and call Manitoulin home.
On the morning of November 13, 2014 on my regular drive to work I hit a patch of black ice, lost control of my vehicle, and struck a rock cut. The impact of the collision fractured my spine, as well as that of my faithful and beloved canine companion Bean.
Before I could completely comprehend what had occurred, friendly and familiar faces were tending to my battered body and giving me much needed moral support. And although unaware at the time, this same care and dignity was given to my dog from the moment she was found and carried from the crash site, to the Island Animal Hospital where she was subsequently, respectfully, euthanized.
Within seconds of the accident and through my preparations and journey to Health Sciences North in Sudbury for scans and a successful surgery, I was surrounded by care and compassion. My physical injuries were being monitored and my mental well-being was being supported by both professionals and good Samaritans alike.
Upon my return home from my stay in Sudbury I was welcomed with many wishes for a speedy recovery and condolences for Bean. Get well cards from friends, neighbours and local residents and countless offers of food and drives and anything that may be needed, has been overwhelming and sincerely appreciated.
During this season of Peace and Love I would like to take this opportunity to thank my family, who without their love and support during this difficult time, I would not have managed. To my colleagues and friends at Central Manitoulin I would like to thank you for your support and understanding. To my friends and neighbours throughout Tehkummah and South Baymouth, and across the Island thank you for your generosity, compassion, and friendship. And to everyone who participated in my aid at the accident scene, in the emergency room and upon my return home along with everyone who has supported me with Bean’s care, I offer my sincerest gratitude.
