OTTAWA – The strength of our communities lies in the efforts of organizations, businesses, and individuals who give of themselves for the benefit of those less fortunate, says Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP, Carol Hughes.
Hughes delivered a heartfelt statement that highlighted the community-mindedness of two remarkable northerners, Darla Hennessy and the late Marion Seabrook.
“Elliot Lake’s Darla Hennessy is well known for community work and as founder of The Christmas Store which helps children find gifts for family members,” said Hughes. “The program has strong support from the community, including the City of Elliot Lake.”
“Likewise, Mindemoya’s Marion Seabrook created Shopping for Kids to help Manitoulin Island youth with gifts for their families,” said Hughes. “The program has support from the community, host Mindemoya United Church, and even places off-island because the spirit of giving has no boundaries.”
Hughes noted that Marion Seabrook had lost her battle with cancer just this week, but expressed certainty that her legacy will carry on through the Shopping for Kids program.
Hughes concluded by extending her deepest sympathy to Marion’s family and friends while relaying her strong appreciation for “people like Marion and Darla, who embody the spirit of giving that makes our communities stronger.”
