Intoxicated driver faces numerous charges after attempting to flee police

COCHRANE – On October 28, 2014, at approximately 7:00 pm, the Cochrane Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to the report of an intoxicated male operating his passenger vehicle in the Town of Cochrane, Ontario.

Members of the Cochrane OPP detachment conducted patrols of the area and later intercepted the suspect driver and vehicle on Concession 2 and 3 Road in Cochrane.

During the traffic stop, police formed their grounds to believe that the male driver was impaired by alcohol and placed him under arrest. During his arrest, the driver became assaultive and engaged police in an altercation which resulted in the suspect male escaping lawful custody and fleeing into the bush on foot.

Responding officers immediately initiated a ground search with the assistance of the OPP Canine Unit and Emergency Response Team (ERT).

Shortly before 10:30 pm, police located the accused male at his residence on Huron Rd in Cochrane and placed him under arrest.

As a result of the investigation conducted by the Cochrane OPP, the 26 year old male driver Tristan Assance of Moosonee, Ontario has been charged contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada with:

  • three counts of Assault;
  • one count of Assault peace officer;
  • one count of Resist peace officer;
  • one count of Fail or refuse to provide a sample;
  • one count of Driving while ability impaired by alcohol;
  • two counts of Mischief under $5,000;
  • one count of Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000;
  • two counts of Fail to comply with condition of undertaking.

He remains in police custody and is scheduled for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cochrane on October 31, 2014.
