Audrey Mae Newlands died peacefully at the Mindemoya Hospital on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at the age of 73. Audrey was born and raised on the Berry Boats property, in Kagawong. She was an only child of Oliver Berry Jr. and Clara Mae (Spry), she grew up learning how to build cedar strip boats as well as their maintenance. She married William Newlands in July 1963 and they took over the family business, which they ran until recently. It was because of their hard work that the business of boat storage and engine repair expanded. Their son, Oliver, now carries on the family tradition. Audrey worked in Kagawong for over 40 years in the post office and over 20 years in community care with Homecare, V.O.N. and Bayshore. She found this work very satisfying because of her interactions with those of her community and her love of helping others. Some of her favorite times were spent with children, especially her grandchildren. She spent many special hours with each of them. One of the most important things that she taught us was to enjoy the small things in life, like smelling roses or watching a butterfly hatch. Her fascination and enthusiasm for nature, as well as her friendly smile for everyone will sure be missed! Audrey loved to try and brighten everyone’s day, and our lives are so much richer because of her. Predeceased by beloved husband William John Newlands “Willie” (2011). Loving mother of Heather Newlands and Francois Masbou of France, Oliver and Diane Newlands of Ice Lake. Dear grandmother of Mathew and Carly, Oliver and Sophie. Stepsister of Grace (husband Herschel Jackson), Roy Jr. Morrell (wife Joanne). Remembered by many relations and friends. Family and friends gathered at the Kagawong Park Centre for visitation from 7 pm to 9 pm on Saturday, September 27, 2014. Funeral Service was at 2 pm on Sunday, September 28, 2014. Burial in Cedars Cemetery, Kagawong. If you care to make a donation to Old Mill Heritage – Kagawong Museum, it would be appreciated in Audrey’s memory.
