MINDEMOYA—On Saturday, September 27 in Mindemoya, Manitoulin Animal Rescue—a group of dedicated volunteers who help reunite lost dogs and cats, as well as homeless ones with loving families—held a rummage sale and barbecue. The money raised will be donated to organizations from on and off the Island who take in these animals to help cover some of their expenses, including spaying and neutering.
“This was a show of appreciation for all the help they have given us with our increasing and unwanted pet population,” said one of the event’s organizers Julie McDermid. “It was a wonderful turnout of people from across the Island and off, supporting this cause, and they were treated to a delicious barbecue and home baking, rummage sale items that had something for everyone, games to be played and golden retriever hugs from Annie, a trained therapy dog which proved to be quite popular.”
The generosity of the people who attended helped raise $1,875.50, which will be distributed among the following organizations: Central Manitoulin Animal Welfare Fund, Pet Save (Manitoulin), Pet Save (Sudbury) and S.A.I.N.T.S. (Sudbury).
“Thank you to everyone, including local businesses who helped, donated or came out to support the animals on Manitoulin Island,” she continued. “This will be an ongoing annual event so look for bigger and better next year!” Anyone interested in joining one of the groups can find Manitoulin Animal Rescue at Facebook by searching Manitoulin Pets Reunited or Manitoulin Island Pets Needing New Homes.
