Elie Wiesel was only 15 when he became a prisoner of the Nazis infamous Auschwitz Concentration Camp. He survived the hell of his captivity and went on to become a superlative journalist, writer and Human Rights advocate. Wiesel holds many honours and laurels including: a US Congressional Gold Medal, the French Legion of Honour Grand Cross, an honourary British Knighthood and the 1986 Nobel Peace Prize. His book ‘Open Heart’ is the heartfelt, reflective narrative of his coming face to face with death once again. His emergency heart surgery and the resulting recovery won with the support of a loving family is the focus of this remarkable book.

‘Longitudes & Attitudes: Exploring the World After September 11’ by Thomas L. Friedman is a collection of his New York Times columns and features on this subject. The author interviewed and discoursed with people from every walk of life in dozens of countries around the world. Friedman considers this book a ‘word album’ that he hopes will secure and safeguard the concerns, feelings and reactions to September 11 and its repercussions. It is a book that gives a firm view of the opinions and convictions of a broad spectrum of the people.

‘The Sweet Girl’ by Annabel Lyons is a novel set in Ancient Greece. The tale of young Pythias, daughter of the renowned teacher and philosopher Aristotle. The story relates to us struggle to find and define her place in a society riddled with gender prejudice, irrational beliefs, hypocrisy and obsessive superstition. This is a good read from an exceptional writer.

Northern Ontario author Giles Blunt’s book ‘Until the Night’ is the sixth novel in his John Cardinal Mystery series. Blunt’s characters are original and endearing, the storylines are plausible and carefully crafted—he is one of the best writers in the mystery genre. Check out this great crime fiction series—John Cardinal is a terrific hero!
