Social service agencies failing aboriginal women

Government guidelines block people from getting help

To the Expositor:

Aboriginal women are going missing or murdered here in Canada and I believe it has a lot to do with being financially stable. Having an inquiry is a waste of time and money because as we all know, about two thirds of the aboriginal population here in Canada is living in poverty or just above the poverty line. These women who have gone missing or murdered were just trying to survive in any way they can, which sometimes leads to tragedy. Or they start hanging around with the wrong crowd and get into drugs and alcohol and get into abusive relationships as long as there is financial stability. Sometimes it leads to murder and most times they have no other choice except to stay in the relationship. If they try to get help with the social services, these people will give them a hard time and start telling them what they need to do first before they can get any help. If you do not have any money, how can you help yourself? That’s how they are trained to find ways to blocking people from help. These guidelines are coming from the government that they’re using and it’s all about saving money and at what cost to people’s lives. This should not be happening here in Canada. Everybody has the right to have equality. To me this is just a sickness in today’s society. The most important thing is to have a roof over our heads and food on the table and be able to pay our bills. Never mind the luxury because it’s not worth it. I have been trying to stay away from this issue. This problem has to be about having a financial stability. That’s the only thing I can think of, people wanting things that they cannot afford or having no other means of getting them. This is where it leads to anxiety or depression.
