Wikwemikong celebrates tractors n’ tailgates there at annual fall fair

WIKWEMIKONG—The Wikwemikong Agricultural Group is once again holding its annual fall fair, fittingly themed ‘tractors n’ tailgates.’

The weekend will kick off this Friday (September 12) with exhibit entries upstairs at the Wikwemikong arena from 9 am to 12 pm for school exhibits and 1 to 4:30 pm for public exhibits, followed by the men’s fastball tournament at Thunderbird Park at 6 pm. There will also be a family dance from 7 to 10 pm at Wasse Abin Pontiac School.

On Saturday, the day will get underway with a pancake breakfast at 9 am at the arena and exhibit viewing (exhibit pick up will be at 3 pm).

The men’s fastball tournament will be all day at Thunderbird Park starting at 9 am.

The fall fair parade will begin at 10 am, starting at Holy Cross.

Take your family by the Ireva Photography booth for a fun fall family portrait.

All community members are invited to bring any ingredient to add to a pot of Stone Soup which will be served at the park from 12 to 3 pm.

There will also be a carnival of science activities from Science North from 12 to 4 pm, pony rides from Kicking Mule Ranch, a mechanical bull and Wipe Out blow up from Checkers Fun Factory.

Get your vocal cords warmed up for the open mic at the Thunderbird Park main stage from 1:30 to 5 pm, as well as live entertainment and special guests Ruby John and George Trudeau starting off the music show from 1 to 1:30 pm.

Also at 1 pm, there will be kids crafts on the main floor of the Wikwemikong arena and the baby farmer pageant.

Kids games will run from 2 to 5 pm at the park including a three legged race, egg on a spoon, bowling, ballon pop and team relays.

Also Saturday afternoon, there will be a Texas horseshoe tournament with both kids and youth divisions.

A crowd favourite at the fair, the horse pull will start at 2 pm and includes both a heavy and light weight division followed by the 4×4 truck pull with diesel and gas divisions at 5 pm.

The evening will wind down with a licenced dance at 9 pm featuring ‘Sweet Nectar Band’ and will include a special appearance by Ruby John and George Trudeau. Admission is $10.

On Sunday, the men’s fastball tournament championships will start at 11 am. The Tour De Rez bike race will start at 10 am at the arena, doing the ‘big loop’ (26 km).

Wiky Fall Fair gold sponsors this year include the Nahndahweh Tchigehgamig Wikwemikong Health Centre, the Wikwemikong Board of Education, the Wikwemikong Tribal Police, the Wikwemikong Development Commission and the Wikwemikong Governance Unit.
