MANITOULIN—Three local educators, Melissa Volpini, Janet McCarville and Robyn Charbonneau, are passionate about increasing the monarch butterfly population and are very pleased to be hosting a ‘teaching and learning with monarch butterflies’ workshop on Manitoulin Island this summer.
On August 6 and 7, educators from the Monarch Teacher Network of Canada will be in Manitowaning to share their knowledge of these beautiful butterflies and how we can help conserve this species.
The Monarch Teacher Network of Canada is a growing network of educators who believe that by bringing nature to the classroom, “we can teach, inspire, and connect our students in an authentic way to the natural world,” a press release from the organization states.
In this workshop teachers will learn about the monarch’s life cycle, migration, and habitat requirements by participating in experiential activities. Participants will build confidence working with actual monarchs including: appropriate handling techniques, care and feeding throughout all life stages and tagging and tracking of migrating monarchs.
This workshop is ideal for teachers, naturalists, butterfly enthusiasts or anyone interested in learning more about monarch butterflies.
