Rural Ontario cuisine and architecture the focus of Rural Roots workshop

GORE BAY—The Gore Bay Museum in co-operation with the Ontario Historical Society will be hosting “Rural Roots: A Heritage Workshop” to be held on Thursday, August 7.

Award winning author and internationally recognized culinary historian Dr. Dorothy Duncan will present “Farm Fare and Rural Recipes.” Dr. Duncan will investigate fascinating aspects of rural Ontario cuisine, with a focus on Manitoulin Island. Tasty samples of food will be provided to participants. Dr. Duncan’s various books will be available for purchase.

Ontario historian and barn expert Dr. John C. Carter will present “Barn Again.” His illustrated slide/talk will look at Ontario rural architecture, threats to these resources, different types of barns and rural outbuildings and innovative ideas for adaptive re-use. This is an update of his previous presentations. Everyone attending is encouraged to bring their remembrances of farm life, stories, photos and other items related to rural history.

This workshop will be held at the Gore Bay Museum. The program begins at 1 pm. Admission is by donation. For further details and registration, please contact museum curator Nicole Weppler at (705) 282-2040.
