Arrest made in murder of M’Chigeeng elder

M’CHIGEENG–The United Chiefs and Council of Manitoulin Anishnaabe (UCCM) Police and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North East Region Crime Unit, under the direction of Detective Inspector Tracy Dobbin of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), have arrested a 26-year-old male, Kimel Corbiere of Central Manitoulin, in the now homicide of M’Chigeeng elder Johnny Panamick.

On Sunday, May 11, 2014 between 7 and 11 pm, a Johnny Panamick was assaulted inside his residence on Back Street.

Mr. Panamick, a 70-year-old male, was discovered later that same night by a neighbour who then contacted paramedics. He was transported to hospital where he was transferred to Heath Sciences North in Sudbury where he died of his injuries on June 13.

On Thursday, July 17 UCCM Anishnaabe Police and the OPP arrested a suspect in relation to this investigation. Kimel Corbiere, age 26 of the Township of Central Manitoulin, is charged with one count of First Degree Murder.

The accused will be appearing on Friday, July 18 at Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay.
