ONTARIO—School is out for the summer! As the school year ends and summer vacation begins, take a few minutes to go over these seven outdoor electrical safety tips with your kids. Education is key in preventing accidents and the safety of Hydro One’s employees and the public are our number one priority.
Obey warning signs and keep away from outdoor areas marked with signs that say “Danger” or “Danger High Voltage”. Never attempt to enter a station.
Before climbing a tree, look up to make sure there are no hydro wires running through or beside it.
Stay clear of overhead power lines and wires. Be sure not to touch any overhead lines with a pole or stick as electricity could travel down that object and cause a shock that could result in a serious injury or death.
Also, fly kits, balloons and toy aircrafts in wide-open spaces, away from power lines.
Respect utility electrical equipment and never touch or climb poles, towers or metal transformer boxes.
Always try to get inside a building or a car during a lightning storm. Avoid wide open spaces and tall trees. If you’re swimming, get out of the water.
Call 911 in case of an emergency. Don’t touch someone who is being shocked until the electricity has been turned off.
