WIKWEMIKONG—For those with a love of one of Canada’s fastest growing recreational pastimes, head to Wikwemikong this Saturday and Sunday for the fourth annual Wiky Mudders ATV Mud Challenge hosted by Wikwemikong Tourism.
“It’s a messy, loud and fun time for all ages,” said Dustin Peltier, product development officer with Wikwemikong Tourism and organizer of the event.
Island riders, and those from beyond Manitoulin’s borders, are encouraged to get involved in the mud run on Saturday, provided they are over 16 years of age. There are four divisions: mud puppy, 300 to 450 cc; coyote, 500 to 680 cc; big dog, 700 to 1,000 cc; and outlaw, 1,000 cc and over and XP modified.
The course is confusing to explain by phone, Mr. Peltier laughed, but it starts with a turn on Maiangowi Road. The route will be well marked with signage so just watch for marquees.
Admission for onlookers is $5 each day, $50 for riders participating on both days with on-site camping available for only $10. Food and beverage vendors are also available at the mud challenge. The Saturday races get underway at 11 am.
The first three divisions have a guaranteed first prize of $500 and $1,000 for the outlaw division. These payouts will grow larger if the number of participants grows in number, Mr. Peltier explained. Second and third place ATVers can look forward to a selection of great prizes too.
Mr. Peltier explained that the mud run is an approximately 80-metre dash, but unlike most mud runs, the Wiky Mudders likes to keep it interesting, throwing a turn into the mix. “It requires more skill and makes it a little more difficult,” he said.
Mud run experts, the Corbiere brothers of M’Chigeeng, have been assisting the Wikwemikong group with their endeavours, lending their knowledge and equipment. The volunteer fire department, too, has also been at work to ensure a muddy mess.
ATV enthusiasts who want to partake in the fun, but in a less messy way, are encouraged to take part in the poker run on Sunday. Leaving from the mud run site, riders will wind their way through 60 kilometres of scenic trails and end back at the start location for a barbecue meal—all for just $20.
