May 5—In the tub Monday morning, and I got an invite to Pauline and Wayne’s for breakfast. Derek, Jodi and Tristen had the first invitation, all in honour of them, and they were heading back home to Mackenzie, BC. Mum and I arrived just as everyone had started eating (noted for good timing). Susan and Simon also. Lovely long breakfast, Peameal bacon, eggs, toast, fresh fruit and dipping chocolate. Sad to see them head home.
Cards with Mum, I won’t say who won. Did some yard work. Tara was a bit lucky at bingo. Made a ham bone soup.
Arnold is looking well. He visited at Wayne and Pauline’s on Monday morning.
Mum had beautiful roses on her table from Anita, Alicia and Samantha.
The farm?? continues to grow, at Susan and Simon’s.
Well isn’t it always something. Sherry phones and she’s at the vets with their Pal. Something in his throat and I guess the outcome will not be pleasant. And it wasn’t. They had to put him down. So sorry for your loss of a friend!
Today the Triangle Club meeting had an excellent presentation by Constable Allan Boyd on abuse of seniors and scams, telemarketers and their tricky methods of taking us in. Thank you for your talk and video. Had coffee and cake. During the meeting time there was an excellent bid in favour of the Mellow Movers for a break in rent to keep the exercise classes going. Good job Mary! Well spoken.
Earlier this day I stopped at Cal’s and was greeted by a wagging tail. A very friendly Percy. The newest family member. Milo was high in the rafters not sure of the dog. I had my breakfast there before going on to town. I must have been following Susan and Simon for three stops the “farmers’ were already there! A nice day, still quite a bite in the air. Miniature daffodils are blooming. Things seem slow. Birds are still eating lots of bird seed. Not too many flies for the fly catchers and I’d better get the hummingbird feed out.
Wednesday cribbage—Great to have back with us Marilyn and Del Vanhorn and Janet and Glenn Knetchel. We had five tables and fun. High hand, Del, 20; high score, Marilyn and Del, 954; second, Bert and Joyce, 936; third, Cal and I, 926; low, Jean (Mum) and Mary, 828; door prizes, Graham and Marilyn. Mum made good buttertarts!
The Exterminators were well named. My team may have had a bit of an advantage in the last category. Mum sure surprised me when she got up to sing that one! Anyway, it threw us into the lead at the last. Jackie was our captain. Just Lori, Mum and I from the original team, and we lucked out by having Lynda and Matthew join us. The “Big Lakers”, a new exceptionally strong team was third with 77 points. Second, the “No Nothings” actually did with 79 points. “Snow Bird” with 72 and “Rockers” with 64. What a fun evening. Good for all our brains! Thanks to Martin and all his research once again. We appreciate all your hard work. We had lots of snacks and refreshments. Thanks providers for prizes too. I forgot to mention it in my last week’s column. If you like trivia, this is the place to be. This event was at Knox United Church Hall in Manitowaning.
Well, I’ve just been digging and a scratching in the ground. Hummingbirds are buzzing overhead as I write. Wild, wind again with another nice light show last evening.
Sunday morning—After my visit to the dump today I stopped at JDs and looked at all the floral beauty. Even bought stuff. Rainbow too! Looks ready for the mothers.
Friday morning—Just overnight the currant bushes have gone green. The ground is covered in white crowned sparrows and gold finches and small birds and the cardinal are in harmony in the back ground. I’m sitting the sun with bare knees! It actually seems warm! Now a woodpecker is adding his call to the mix, and the fragrance from Anstice farm must have washed away over night. What a light show. The heat lightning was spectacular. Lovely little downpours! Rose breasted grosbeaks just flew into the feeder. What a lovely sight. Saw the first swallow this week. Who told me they saw hundreds at a bridge? The causeway perhaps?
Betty Jean and Dorothy did the euchre lunch. There were five and a half tables and much fun. I almost got a cuff in the ear for playing my cards wrong (or was that not playing them right?). I didn’t think I made mistakes. Ha! Men’s high, Clive with 86 and 5 lone hands; men’s low, Margaret, 46; ladies’ high, Marilyn Haner; ladies’ lone hands, Dorothy Allard, 5; ladies’ low, Mary Ann, 44; door, Marilyn Vanhorn.
On my way home I stopped at Carl’s and challenged him to a cribbage game and I got soundly defeated (or did I?). Hung around until he asked me to stay for supper (he was baking pork chops in the oven). They were delish.
The adder tongues are always in bloom for Mother’s Day, but not this year. Still very small buds. And then again I was wrong (for the first time ever), below the hill red and white trilliums in bloom and adder tongues too. Strange all at once. Kind of like the summer birds all at once!
Cal has some kind of a cat at his place. Making funny noises again? Scary!
Well Mother’s Day or no (I’m not his so I guess that’s okay) out of many games of cribbage. I have to admit that he’s the bestest player. Started early in the day at Mum’s. She skunked Susan, then when I joined in the game, Susan returned the same “gift” to Mum! We had a busy day taking in church (all about Mothers) at St. Andrews. Sherry met us there, then to Carol’s and Earl’s for lunch. Lori is back (looking radiant) for the summer bringing a new beau/cum kitchen help (at least for the weekend).
We went to JDs Garden Centre, wished everyone there and at the Garden Shed a Happy Mama’s Day. They were quite busy. Then down to Rainbow Gardens for a walk through. I dropped Mum off at Susan’s, then went to Cal’s. We joined Rick and Kathleen and her Mom and Dad, Anna and Don, at Carol’s and Earl’s for our delicious supper and visit. Thanks for including us, so nice.
To all Mothers (even if you’re Dads or Mamas of critters), hope your day was the happiest ever!
Monday morning just heard that Harold Arnold passed away this morning. Sympathy to all.
Our Sr. UCW gave the mothers a box of pansies this year. So pretty.
It’s funny when Kim and I were talking on the phone Sunday morning I mentioned the rose breasted grosbeak. He said we don’t get them here, just as one flew in to the field. Coincidence?
