Orillia Tactical Response Unit on scene near Sault Ste. Marie

HAVILLAND TOWNSHIP – Members with the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police are currently on the scene of a barricaded person(s) in the 6000 block of Highway 17 north.

On April 2, 2014, a Ford F150 grey pickup truck was involved in a criminal occurrence in Thunder Bay, Ontario. At approximately 10:20 pm on April 2, 2014, the same vehicle was involved in an alleged theft of gas from the Marathon area.

The vehicle was later observed southbound on Highway 17 towards Sault Ste. Marie. A spike belt was successfully deployed at the Batchewana River Bridge. However, the vehicle continued southbound for approximately 20 km before coming to a full stop. The male driver exited the vehicle with a firearm. Both the male and a female passenger fled on foot in the bush.

OPP Canine and members of the Sault Ste. Marie OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) performed a canine track and located the suspects who had barricaded themselves in a camp in the 6000 block of Highway 17 North. The Orillia OPP Tactical Rescue Unit had been deployed and attended the scene.

At approximately 12:30 pm on April 3, 2014, a male and a female were arrested and taken into custody. The investigation is still ongoing and charges are pending.
