Ice Chips and Canoe Quips April 2

Track season has started

Although completing a race on the Manitoulin Secondary School track might be best navigated on snowshoes, William Scott competed in his first race of the season in climate controlled comfort. The Grade 10 student is part of the Manitoulin Mustang team but he has also joined forces with the Track North team under the tutelage of Darren Jermyn. The elite team took in the York University High School Indoor Meet in Toronto.

William did very well for his first indoor experience with its different distances and on top of that, his first time setting up starting blocks. In his opening race, he came in 12th in a tough 600m field. On day two, he finished in 11th out of 25 guys for the 300m in a snappy time of 41.75. So that time can only go south from there as he gains valuable experience and is looking forward to his training and the spring track season. Good luck William!

Island Tiger into Jr. A Finals

Congratulations to Little Current’s Michael Laidley and his Aurora Tigers Jr. A squad who have worked to a commanding three-game lead in their best of seven series against the Kingston Voyageurs. They can seal the OJHL title with a win tonight in Aurora. Laidley, who just turned 19 over the weekend, has had quite the year. He was one of the Tigers` leading scorers, picked as part of an all-Ontario, Jr. A all-star team and signed a scholarship to a top American Ivy-League school. Not bad, but not without a lot of hard work: well deserved, Michael.

Lacrosse anyone?

Lacrosse is Canada’s National summer sport and the Manitoulin and North Shore Lacrosse Association would like to help introduce lacrosse to you and your kids. The league reinforces sportsmanship, fundamentals, fun, fitness and friendship for ages 4 to 14. Beginners of all ages are welcome. Registration is coming soon at the Little Current-Howland Arena on April 10, from 6-8 pm. The available divisions are paperweight (with the birth-years of 2008-2010), tyke (2006-2007), novice (2004-2005) and peewee (2002-2003). Unfortunately there will be no bantam or midget this season. A $95 per child fee must accompany registration. For more information contact: Leslie at 705-285-4335 or visit their Facebook page at Manitoulin and North shore Lacrosse Association or their website at www.mnslacrosse.com.

The MNS Lacrosse organization is also looking for some parent volunteers to get the season off to a great start. Four are needed for the Parents Council (2 -3 meetings in March and help with the registration process as well as the one day tournament). Two coaches required (1 hour for two days each week for about 8 weeks. Four assistant coaches (1 hour per week for 8 weeks). Finally they need four time keepers with a commitment of 1 hour per week for 8 weeks). Use the above contact info.

Panther Points

There are a few important dates coming up for those interested in playing or coaching for the Manitoulin Panthers for the 2014-2015 season. The Panthers will not be holding fall tryouts this year and plan on solidifying their teams this month! The tryouts for Atom, Pee Wee, Bantam and Midgets will take place on April 14-18.

Even before that however they will be holding interest skates to see if there are enough players to ice a Panther Novice squad. It is slated for next week, April 8-9 from 6:30 – 8pm. Please check out the Panther website at www.manitoulinpanthers.ca. There you will also find the three page tryout policy that includes all of the nitty-gritty on the process and an itemized list on skills that prospects can be working on.

*Note, coaches who interested in guiding one of the squads will also need to get information there on the application process.

Eagles flying

Congratulations to Coach Gerry Holliday and his Central Manitoulin Eagles basketball team who competed in the Rainbow District Board championships last week. The team that has just a pair of Grade 8s took their rebuilding squad into the RDSB `Friendly` Division and had some intense games and managed one win over Levack. Congratulations to: Amber Wahl, Julia Desbien-St. Amand, Skye McGibbon, Abby Dewar, Trinity Leeson, Maddy Niven, Jary White, Avery Sheppard, Marjorie Scott, Hailey McGillis Prior, Bethany Wesno and Carissa Holliday.

Active adults

It is great to receive more names of some super active adults who should be recognized as they work out in their quiet anonymity. The following Little Current women have been improving their fitness at the Little Current meeting of the Mellow Movers group. Congratulations to Lorene Martell, Judy Martin and Sally White. Keep up the good work!
