Special weather warning for Manitoulin and the Northeast

Special weather statement in effect for:

  • Blind River – Thessalon
  • Espanola – Killarney
  • Manitoulin Island

Snow expected, beginning late on Wednesday in Northwestern Ontario and spreading toward Northeastern Ontario by Thursday morning.

A developing weather system will track towards Ontario on Thursday. Snow associated with this system will spread into the southern parts of Northwestern Ontario late in the day on Thursday, then spread eastward through the night into the southern parts of Northeastern Ontario.

At this time it appears that parts of Northwestern Ontario – roughly along and south of a line from about Fort Frances to Marathon – could receive between 10 and 15 cm of snowfall in total, most of is falling Wednesday night.

Over Northeastern Ontario, the snowfall is expected to begin around or after midnight on Wednesday night and persist through the day on Thursday. Snowfall amounts are uncertain at this time, but could well exceed 15 cm. There may also be a transition to rain over southern sections, from about Sault Ste Marie through North Bay and southward on Thursday night, with a risk of freezing rain possible during the transition.

Snowfall warnings may be issued as the event draws nearer and confidence increases, most likely for regions in Northeastern Ontario.
