SHEGUIANDAH FIRST NATION—The Towers family of the Sheguiandah First Nation, who recently lost their home to a blaze, has been relocated to a new home in the community thanks to the fast acting staff of the band, Shannon Towers is pleased to report.
While she has not heard definitively the cause of the fire, Ms. Towers said she is fairly certain that the fire’s cause was electrical in nature. The March 1 fire completely gutted the home while Ms. Towers was away at a youth retreat at Anderson Lake. Her two sons, Cody and Phoenix, were home at the time of the fire and each suffered from some smoke inhalation.
When she got the phone call stating that her house was on fire and upon learning that her sons were okay, Ms. Towers said she felt “relieved.”
The Towers family is known in the community for looking after cats and dogs, of which there were many in the house. UCCM Police took one cat and one dog to veterinary hospital following the fire. The family’s mother cat, which was missing after the fire, reappeared when Ms. Towers visited the house the morning after, peering out from the wreckage. “She’s okay,” she was glad to report.
The family is in need of virtually everything and an account has been set up to assist with recovery at branches of the TD Bank. The account is in Ms. Towers’ name and is numbered 6041287. Donations of clothing are also greatly needed and can be dropped off between Monday and Friday at the Sheguaindah First Nation Health Centre. The boys require sizes XL and L while Ms. Towers and her mother, who also lives with the family, need sizes L and XL.
“My sons are okay and happy,” she said of life after the fire. “We’re getting a lot of help—we’re lucky. All in all, we’re so lucky.”
Ms. Towers said that although the reason may not be evident right now, she’s a firm believer in “there’s a reason for everything” and she continues to look ahead with a positive attitude.
