Charges laid in Wiky murder

by Alicia McCutcheon

WIKWEMIKONG—Charges were laid in the July 17 murder of 29-year-old Matthew Shawande against his neighbour, Glen McGregor, who lived in the same Wikwemikong apartment complex.

After an investigation by the Wikwemikong Tribal Police and Ontario Provincial Police Criminal Investigation Branch, police charged 20-year-old Glen McGregor with second degree murder, break enter and theft, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and breach of recognizance.

Mr. Shawande was found dead, with obvious signs of trauma, at 1:30 pm last Sunday, July 17 by a passerby, who called 9-1-1.

Constable Al Boyd, community services officer with the OPP, noted that the property near where Mr. Shawande’s remains were discovered contained a house with three apartment units as well as an apartment complex with four units. All seven units were vacated during the investigation, but residents have since moved back into their homes.

Mr. Shawande and Mr. McGregor each had a unit in the house, each with separate entrances, Constable Boyd explained.

While Mr. McGregor appeared in court last week, the bail hearing was remanded until Monday, August 8 at 10 am at the Gore Bay courthouse.

Police are asking for anyone with knowledge of the crimes to call police at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 to remain anonymous.
