Well it is no news to anyone that it has been another cold week on Manitoulin. The sun has just peeked over the pines shining its warmth through the window, but it is still -28°C outside. The little buck and doe were at the feeder early this morning eating the corn. We have about 20 to 30 deer each evening feeding on the corn and sometimes knocking the bird feeders to the ground.
There was good soup and sandwiches served at the Anglican Church in Mindemoya. This event is always well attended and enjoyed by many. The decadent pancake breakfast Saturday morning at the Providence Bay United Church was a big success, filling many with delicious fare.
Birthday wishes to everyone celebrating this month of March. A few ladies treated Pat Burke to a birthday celebration this past week at the Roosterant in Mindemoya. This writer’s grandson Alton turns 4 on the first day of spring. Wow how time flies!
There is lots of good curling and hockey being played in Mindemoya and Providence Bay. The games sure make for good exercise or just sitting and cheering as a spectator. The Mindemoya Thunder bantam and midgets are out of the finals but they sure had some good games. We are so proud of these hockey players as they put their hearts into each game. The Thunder peewee team is in the finals and is playing against M’Chigeeng.
The men’s bonspiel is at the Providence Bay Curling Club on March 7, 8 and 9. Drop by the rink to watch some very good curling and cheer on your favourite teams. The Brier started this past Saturday on TSN. Eva Bond had a few ladies in to watch and enjoyed a delicious supper and a few games of euchre. The Women’s Worlds starts on March 15.
The euchre tournament on February 24 had eight tables on another dirty snowy evening. The winners were high, Bill and Peter; second, Jim and Fred; third, Marilyn and Irene; and fourth, Aline and Sally. We’re glad you all got home safe and sound.
Another pile-up on Highway 400 last week found Owen and Shirley Legge’s daughter Jackie in the middle. We so glad to hear that you were not hurt. One must travel carefully always mindful of the weather conditions and watching out for the other guy!
Mark McDermid of Toronto was here for a week visiting family and friends. This writer hasn’t seen Mark since we were teens!
Our get well wishes are extended to Andy Watson in the hospital and to all those friends and family members who are under the weather. Patricia Young is on the mend after knee surgery in Sudbury. Don Burke is up and around to therapy four times a week and is making a miraculous recovery.
Sympathy wishes to the Moore family of Rockville in the loss of Terry. So much tragedy so close to home. James Moore is recovering from his injuries in the Sudbury hospital. James attended CMPS and participated in the Providence Bay motocross. We are all thinking of you and wish you the best in your recovery. Please be mindful of making a donation to this family in need.
Our condolences are extended to the McDermid family in the passing of Jack. He was raised in Providence Bay. Sympathy is extended to the Boniface family in the passing of Leola. Leola, her daughter Joanne and mother Mary lived in Providence Bay for a few years.
The school March break is just around the corner with a Professional Development Day on Friday, March 7. Daylight Savings Time begins early Sunday morning on the 9. Remember to spring forward and turn your clocks ahead an hour.
