LITTLE CURRENT—The Northeast Town Public Library in Little Current is pleased to show the private family collection of Judy Martin titled ‘Family Paintings’ from Friday, February 14 until March 25.
Ms. Martin, known of late for her work as a textile artist (Ms. Martin also has a textile exhibit on now at the Art Gallery of Sudbury showcasing four years of stitching four tapestries as part of the Manitoulin Community Circle Project, Ms. Martin’s vision), began her artistic career as a watercolour painter. She explained to The Expositor that while she always painted “a bit,” starting a family unleashed her creativity and she began painting in earnest in 1981, three years after the birth of her first child.
“Because they were growing up so fast and because they were so beautiful, I really felt I had to capture them in watercolour,” the artist explained.
Before moving to Manitoulin in 1993, the Martin family lived in Kenora where, she said, watercolours of her children were incredibly popular and can be found today in offices and homes throughout the Northern Ontario community.
The approximately 15-piece show will include works not seen before by fans of Ms. Martin that range from 1981 to 2002.
“(These pieces) really give context to my career,” she said.
A meet-the-artist gathering will be held to kick off the show this Saturday, February 15 from 10 am until 3 pm.
The Northeast Town Public Library is located at 50 Meredith Street in Little Current and is open on Tuesdays from 10 am to 8 pm, Wednesdays from 10 am to 5 pm, Fridays from 12 noon until 5 pm and Saturdays from 10 am until 3 pm.
