Fracking is an increasingly widespread method of extracting oil and gas from ancient deposits by drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at a high pressure in order to fracture rocks and release the hydrocarbons. Test wells drilled on Manitoulin have indicated that gas and oil are present below the Island.

The Manitoulin Area Stewardship Council (MASC) is a not-for-profit volunteer organization. Its mission statement is “To educate, influence, promote and support community based stewardship of natural resources in the Manitoulin Area and to provide community based guidance for the good management, enhancement and utilization of healthy, sustainable, aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.”

Within this framework, MASC is seeking the opinions of those who enjoy Manitoulin Island, with regard to local Fracking.
