KAGAWONG—The weather may have been cold and snowy outside, but those who packed the Park Centre in Kagawong last Saturday evening were warmed by the Manitoulin Community Choir Song and Cider ’13 concert.
“We would like to welcome all of you to our Song and Cider 2013 concert,” stated choir director Jane Best. “We will be presenting a good mix of songs; from Canadian pieces to fun pieces and much more.”
Ms. Best pointed out that while a couple of the choir members were not available for the concert due to illness, and “I just wanted to mention how much I love working with the choir and how much fun it is.”
The list of songs the choir presented included ‘The Glory of Love,’ ‘My Favourite Things,’ ‘Winter,’ ‘Fire and Snow’ (with Paul Best on cello), ‘When the Stars Fall’ (with a solo by John Robertson), ‘My Lord,’ ‘What a Mornin’ a traditional spiritual with a solo by Peter Gordon and guest flutist Robert Kirk performing. ‘Ye Banks and Braes’ and ‘A Scottish Air,’ was followed by the men’s chorus performing two songs, ‘Fogarty’s Cove’ and ‘The Rio Grande.’
After a short intermission, which included cider, treats and refreshments, the choir was back on stage, performing ‘Blessings,’ ‘Brother James’s Air,’ ‘Sing When the Spirit Says Sing,’ the women’s chorus performing ‘There Has to Be a Song,’ ‘Hand to Hand,’ which included a solo and guitar performance by Peter Gordon and Paul Best playing the bouzouki. This was followed by ‘Song of the River’, and ‘Cross the Wide Missouri’ with Robert Kirk on flute.
The Manitoulin Community Choir 2013 performers include: Robyn Best, Mary Buie, Rosanne Campbell, Sandy Cook, Kathie Davidson, Janice Frame, Judith Jones, Judy Land, Victoria Mazzuchin, Sharon Meeker, Melissa Munro, Rosie Munro, Stefani Sasvari, Terry Thompson, Mary-Jo Tracy, Theresa Webb, Linda Willson, Paul Best, Johnny Fletcher, Peter Gordon, Jim Munro, Don Nelson, Jon Oliver, John Robertson, Dan Thompson, David Williamson and Chuc Willson. Jane Best is the director of the choir, with Joan Eichner as accompanist and guest flutist Robert Kirk.
The Manitoulin Community Choir rehearses on Tuesday evenings at C. C. McLean Public School in Gore Bay. The group welcomes singers who would enjoy the challenge of learning new music from choral scores. Please ask any member for more information, or contact Jane Best at (705) 282-2821.
