MANITOULIN—The search for 30-year-old Juanita “Winnie” Migwans has entered a critical phase as police launch a dedicated tip line to gather new information. Ms. Migwans, a resident of M’Chigeeng First Nation, was last seen on October 2 walking near Highway 551 and Oakhill Drive around 10:30 am. She was wearing a light-colored jacket and dark pants.
Her disappearance, reported on October 7, has sparked widespread concern, with the United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin (UCCM) Anishnaabe Police and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) leading an extensive search operation. Despite thorough efforts, including community searches and investigative work, few clues have emerged, prompting authorities to expand their approach.
The new tip line—1-833-941-9010—was announced by the OPP on December 23, 2024 providing a direct channel for anyone with information about Ms. Migwans’ whereabouts. Police emphasized the importance of community involvement, urging those who may have seen or heard anything to come forward. For those who wish to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers is also accepting tips at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online.
Juanita Migwans is described as an Indigenous woman, standing 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing approximately 110 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
The urgency of her case is underscored by the tragic reality of missing and murdered Indigenous women (MMIW) in Canada. Indigenous women are disproportionately affected by violence, with rates of going missing or being murdered far higher than those of non-Indigenous women. This crisis has spurred calls for systemic change, greater protections, and a reevaluation of law enforcement responses.
However, in this instance, police are being commended for their swift and serious response. The collaboration between the UCCM Police, OPP, and community members reflects a commitment to leaving no stone unturned in the search for Ms. Migwans.
“Our officers understand the weight this carries for the family and the community,” an OPP spokesperson stated. “We will not rest until we have answers.”
Community members have also rallied, holding vigils and sharing Ms. Migwans’ story across social media, determined to ensure she is not forgotten.
If you have information, no matter how small it may seem, authorities urge you to call the tip line at 1-833-941-9010.
