Frosty Cup hockey tournament this weekend in Gore Bay

GORE BAY—In this the festive holiday season, the annual Frosty Cup Benefit Hockey tournament provides a great venue for families and friends to gather for some fun prior to the Christmas holiday. It also provides a very important role in supporting some individuals and families in need in the Island community.

“Proceeds from the tournament go toward individuals and families in need,” said Scott McDougall, one of the organizers of the annual tournament which will take place this weekend, December 20-22 in Gore Bay.

Mr. McDougall said the tournament has a full slate of teams, with eight men’s open teams, four women’s open division teams and four over 40 men’s teams. He also noted there is a waiting list of teams hoping to get a spot in the tournament.”

The tournament organizing committee as well as the Gore Bay Rotary Club and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 514 in Gore Bay are also part of the event. “Going back about three years, the Rotary and Legion became participants in the organizing committee and help out during the weekend,” said Mr. McDougall. “The Rotary Club has been running the bar in the upstairs area of the Gore Bay arena since the inception of the Frosty Cup tournament. And the Legion hosts a fundraising dance on Saturday evening that allows them to donate toward the tournament. We are grateful to both of these groups for their support and assistance.”

Help is always needed and appreciated by the Rotary Club to run the bar in the arena during the weekend, said Mr. McDougall. “Sponsors are welcome and volunteers are needed,” he said noting sponsors can get in touch with LeeAnne Bell, while helpers for the bar can get in touch with Lori Zahnow (705-282-8508) or Peter Carter (705-698-4922).

As for who will benefit from the proceeds of the tournament this year Mr. McDougall said, “we are continuing to discuss candidates. We will have a meeting on Tuesday (of this week) to zero in on this.”
