It is officially December! Winter is here, and snow is finally on the ground. With Winter Break just three weeks away, the holiday spirit is in the air. MSS students will begin their two-week holiday on Friday, December 20th. Until then, MSS remains as busy as ever. Let’s take a look at what students were up to this week!
The week kicked off with a Battery Drive organized by the MSS robotics team. Students and staff were encouraged to bring in used batteries for proper disposal. This initiative aimed to prevent harmful chemicals from polluting the environment and to promote recycling. Call2Recycle, the organization Manitoulin Metal is collecting batteries to take the zinc out of the batteries to resell with profits going towards children’s hospitals. Manitoulin Metal will soon count the batteries collected and ship them off, keeping them out of landfills.
A sweet highlight of the week was the Krispy Kreme fundraiser also organized by Manitoulin Metal. The students sold 400 boxes of doughnuts, raising $3,200 dollars for the team. This is a significant contribution and will aid the team in the costs associated with building a new robot.

Parents, community members, kids, and sponsors are all invited to visit MSS on Tuesday, December 17 from 3-6 pm to meet the build team, the coding team, the business team and hear about the initiatives they have in place for the 2025 season.
Manitoulin Metal has started a podcast! Their first episode will be out Thursday, December 5 on all podcast streaming platforms. The podcast is called BEEyond Robotics.
The robotics team is hosting a FIRST LEGO League explore tournament on Saturday, December 7 from 11 am to 2 pm at MSS. Watch the two teams, composed of kids ages 6 through 10 compete against each other with the robots they have spent the last 12 weeks creating! The event is open to the public and everyone is welcome!
On Tuesday, November 26, MSS students travelled to Science North in Sudbury. The purpose of this field trip was to watch a live-streamed knee replacement surgery. The surgeon on the live stream took questions from the audience during the surgery and explained each step of what he was doing. After, the students got to explore Science North before heading back to Manitoulin.
A fun twist to the week included PJ Day on Thursday, November 28. Students and staff got to enjoy a day of comfort while attending regular classes. Hopefully, no one dozed off!!
Excitement is building among the students and staff involved in the upcoming Europe trip. This educational tour will take students to several European countries including France, England, and Italy, providing them with a unique opportunity to experience different cultures and historical sites firsthand. Preparations are in full swing, with meetings and fundraising plans to support the trip. Students are in the process of getting passports and preparing for this 10-day trip. The plane to Europe will take off on Tuesday, March 4 and extend into the March Break.
Rounding off the week was the end of the Purdy’s Chocolate Student Council fundraiser. Selling a variety of Purdy’s chocolates, the Student Council successfully raised $2,116.50. The funds will support various student initiatives and events throughout the year. A round of applause for all students who helped to fundraise!
