Manitoulin Secondary junior boys take North Shore volleyball title

M’CHIGEENG—The Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) Mustangs junior boys’ volleyball team are the 2024 North Shore Secondary School Association (NSSSA) champions!

The Mustangs team followed up on their first place standing in the regular season by winning the NSSSA championship, hosted at MSS on Wednesday of last week. “The junior team did quite well,” stated Jordan Smith, MSS sports coordinator. 

Mr. Smith explained the Mustangs beat Central Algoma Secondary School (CASS) in three straight games in the semi-final playoff, then disposed of Espanola High School again in three straight games in the finals to take the championship.

The Mustangs junior team is coached by Andrew Argall and is made up of players Basi Mara, Ethan Ense, Anders Watson, Jonah Balfe, Jack Bridgeman, Chase Taylor, Dylan Kuntsi, Sean Zembal, Collin Goodfellow, Roen Deschenes, Spencer Cortes and Aavin Edralin.

The Mustangs junior team finished first overall in the regular season standings with an 11-win one-loss record. They have now qualified for the Northern Ontario Secondary School Association (NOSSA) championship taking place at Lockerby Composite School in Sudbury on November 14-15. 

The MSS senior boys’ volleyball team season came to an end last week in the playoffs.

The Mustangs, who had finished third overall in the regular season with a four-win, five loss season, lost in the NSSSA semi-finals on Wednesday of last week. The playoff tournament was held at Espanola High School.
