With another week under our belts, MSS students are ready to roll into midterm season, more commonly called “November.” Let’s take a look at what students have been up to!
The week was kicked off with guest presenter and Stratford Festival actor, Beck Lloyd. Ms. Lloyd is a Toronto-based actor, theatre creator, activist, and educator. With her experience in theatre, film, and television, Beck guided the MSS musical cast and several English classes in performance workshops. For the English classes, she focused on analyzing Shakespeare with an emphasis on what kind of statement the character was making and where the emotion in the statements came from. For the theatre group, Beck gave her insight into stage performance and left the musical crew with some new acting techniques to try. Both groups got to participate in games to break the ice and become more comfortable speaking in front of their peers. MSS students are sending a huge “thank you” to Beck Lloyd!
As the week rolled on, excitement for Halloween built up. Here’s a quick rundown of the spooky festivities:
On Monday, October 28, students wore black and orange to get into the spooky spirit!
On Tuesday, October 29, there was Scary-Oke (karaoke) in the cafeteria! Students were able to take the mic and sing their favourite Halloween songs like ‘Spooky Scary Skeletons!’
On Wednesday, October 30, students carved pumpkins. There was everything from traditional jack-o-lantern faces to detailed designs of Halloween movie characters like Oogie Boogie and Jack Skellington.
The Halloween dance on the evening of October 30 was the highlight of the week. The cafeteria was turned into a dance floor decked out with fog from a fog machine, flashing lights and eerie decorations, creating the perfect Halloween atmosphere. Students arrived in their costumes, dancing the night away to current hits and Halloween favourites.
Thursday, October 31, students wore their costumes to school to celebrate Halloween! You could see witches, superheroes, ghosts and more in the hallways. The day wrapped up with a spooky movie buyout, where students could opt out of their last class to watch a Halloween-themed movie in the cafeteria. It was the perfect way to end the week, giving everyone a chance to relax and enjoy some spooky fun.
Amid all the Halloween excitement, there was another reason to celebrate. The senior trivia team from MSS won first place in the Reach For The Top competition at LaSalle Secondary School in Sudbury. This competition tested their knowledge of everything from history and science to literature and current events. The team’s hard work and dedication paid off after they brought home the gold! The competition was held on Halloween, so the team dressed up as witches while they were competing. Congratulations, Mustangs!
From Beck Lloyd’s inspiring Shakespeare workshops to the lively Hallo-week activities and the senior trivia team’s big win, it was a week to remember!
That’s all for now! Until next time, go, Mustangs, go!
