On the World stage, in Sarnia!
Kohyn Eshkawkogan has started his play with the U-17 Team Canada-Red at the 2021 World Challenge being played in Sarnia over the next week. Kohyn had an awesome preliminary game in a big win over Finland 3 to 1 Sunday. The youngster picked up an assist on the opening goal and helped his team keep the Finns to just one goal!
Meanwhile, his 67’s had a great time on their tour of Manitoulin last weekend before Kohyn went to Sarnia. The 67’s website posted a classic picture of the team with the vridge in the background in Little Current. This past Sunday, when Kohyn was facing Finland, the 67’s hosted Kingston and picked up a point in an over-time loss.
Kohyn’s Team Red will play against the US on Monday and then this weekend will feature the finals of this condensed tournament in the middle of the season. All games can be livestreamed except the championship game because it will be played primetime on TSN HD Saturday at 7:30! We hope to see you there, Kohyn!
Panther Points
The Manitoulin Panthers are developing fast and both the U13 and U15 Panthers teams played the Copper Cliff Reds squads on home ice this Sunday. The U13 Panthers kept it close but took a 4-2 loss to the Reds, with goals from Oliver Wilding and Parker Polden-Woodley.
The U15 Panthers kept their winning streak going with a 2-1 victory over the Reds with Alex Bourcier starting off the scoring and Cohen Rajotte netting the tie-breaking goal.
After a short week home, the Manitoulin Lady Panthers packed their bags and hit the ice. This weekend the Lady Panthers travelled back up north to Timmins to compete in the second Super-Weekend of their season. The girls saw major improvements in just a week’s time and are coming home with two losses and two wins to add to their record.
The second game of the weekend was again to the Temiskaming Puck Hounds. Although the girls didn’t come away with the win, they ended the game 3-1, working hard to improve from the first Super Weekend’s 8-0 loss against the same team. Incredible dedication and perseverance was shown.
The weekend was wrapped up with two back-to-back wins against Kapuskasing 3-1 and 4-2. The girls’ skills and teamwork continue to improve with each game. This coming weekend will be time off from travel and games, until the girls first home game in the coming weeks! Go Lady Panthers!
Flag Football
Assiginack Public School continued their classic fall flag football championships. Manitoulin Schools usually send a couple of teams to claim bragging rights and one of the coveted ‘Golden Balls’! One of the, some will say crudely spraypainted balls will be proudly displayed in the Central Manitoulin Public School’s trophy case.
C.M.P.S. has had a real interest in football for the last number of years thanks to Coaches like, Ellen Ferguson and John Spanos. Their charges this year, featured Nova Debassige, Aryiss Noble-Stone, Allie Filkweert, Lilly Carrick, Autumn Bryan, Brinley Corbiere, Kristen Lee, Gibson Gilchrist, Graeme Becks, Knox Sheppard, Brantley Lauber, Carter Kuepfer, Reid Hare, Ryley Corbiere, Chayton Martell, Hunter Kearns, Devon MacKelvie, Login McCarthy and Kaine Rooplal.
Off their Rock, hockey!
At least two local, sports stars will be facing off against each other in this year’s OCAA (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association) this coming season! Aysia Debassige and Delaney ‘Boog’ Bridgeman were at the top of their cohort for several years in any sport they tried. With both going to college this year it was only natural for them to try out for the Varsity Hockey teams after playing rep hockey for over a decade!
Aysia, down south in Barrie, will don a Georgian Grizzlies jersey, while Boog will have had her third try-out in North Bay with the Canadore Panthers!
Jack Bridgeman’s “AA” Copper Cliff Reds had two exhibition games, beating the Sudbury Wolves 5-0 and the Soo 5-1. His home opener is tomorrow against Nickel City Cubs in Copper Cliff.
