Elementary Cross Country!

The annual cross-country meet took place at the Gore Bay Golf and Country Club hosted by Charles C. McLean (CCM) on a near-perfect fall day. Teacher Bruce Lindsay and his band of merry volunteers put on another great event that featured 222 runners from eight schools!

Little Current Public school (LCPS) was dominant in the aggregate, team title with 20 points, CCM second (13) and Central Manitoulin Public School (CMPS) in third (11.5). Congrats to all other schools sending teams: Assiginack (APS), Wiikwemkoong, Lakeview, St. Joseph’s (Sheshegwaning) and Shawanosowe (Birch Island) who completed the amazing turnout.

Individual podium finishes in the eight divisions were as follows. The eight and under girls division was won by Isobel Abotossaway (LCPS), Rose Karn LCPS 2nd and Rosie Wiwchar (CCM) 3rd. In the boys’ race CMPS runner Eli Dewar was first, Simon Page (APS) 2nd and Adam Honess (CCM) 3rd.

The 9 – 10 girls’ tape was broken by Ashlyn Pegelo (LCPS), then Sulla Sheppard (CMPS) and third was Megan McKeown (APS). In the boys’ event, Arlo Menzies (CCM) 1st, Tate Abotossaway (LCPS) 2nd and Alex Woods (CCM) 3rd.

Runners representing all elementary schools on Manitoulin took part in the annual cross country championships last week at Manitoulin Golf.

In the 13 plus girls’ race, Brooke Simon (LCPS) put all her training into taking gold, Kayla Eadie (LCPS), second, and Lily Carrick (CMPS), third. The guys’ race was won by Casey Bowerman (LCPS), David Joyce (CCM) second Nathan Quackenbush (LCPS).

Panther Points!

Our Manitoulin Panthers are back into full swing with the U18 Manitoulin Lady Panthers taking on the Sudbury Lady Wolves in an Exhibition game in preparation for their first Super-weekend of the season in Kapuskasing. The Lady Panthers fell short with a score of 4-1 but got a great primer on their season.

The U13 and U15 teams both began their regular season in the Nickel District League this weekend. In their first ever game, the U13s took a loss to the Reds in Copper Cliff. The U15 Panthers tied their season opener 2-2 against the Reds in Copper Cliff. At their home opener on Sunday, the Panthers took down the Nickel City Cubs with a score of 4-1.

Good luck to both the U13 and U15s as they head to the Porcupine Icebreaker Tournament this weekend, and to the Lady Panthers in Kapuskasing!

First goal for the ‘Show’ in the ‘Show’

The OHL (as well as other leagues of course) has been referred to as the “Show” by young Ontario hopefuls working to get into major junior hockey. Kohyn Eshkawkogan, who has been selected to compete for Canada in the U-17 World Challenge next month in Sarnia, has been affectionately called the ‘Ko-Show’ by last year’s team as well as his new Ottawa 67’s team. The young M’Chigeeng band member has been amping up his game in preparation for another milestone in the youngster’s hockey experiences.

He is a smart and stingy d-man but is also helping his squad on offense and is currently third in scoring amongst his fellow 67’s defencemen and the top rookie. He has been played in all nine of their games and has a goal and four assists already. We are anxiously waiting for your next accomplishment, Kohyn!

A good sport is good for sports.
