CHARLES ROYCE BLACKWOOD
In loving memory of Charles Royce Blackwood who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at age 92. Born in Stellarton, Nova Scotia, he moved to Ontario in 1952 and met his beloved wife Elaine (Cooper) of 70 years. Predeceased by his parents, Robert and Florence (Rowe) Blackwood; siblings Bert, Art, Dodie and Mildred; cherished father of Bill (Louise), Mike (Anne), Rob (Kate) and Kathy Leroux (Pete); loving grandfather to Craig, Keith, Brent, Ashley, Jason, Jeffrey, Sarah and Lindsey (predeceased);Â and 10 great-grandchildren. As a young man of 25, while working for Inco driving transport for Cooper and Smith during strikes, Royce built his home in Walden with the knowledge his brother and uncle imparted him, learning plumbing and electrical as he continued on. Later, with the help of his three young sons, he built the family cottage on Lake Mindemoya, Manitoulin Island, where he and his family enjoyed many happy, fulfilling years making unforgettable memories. He retired in 1989 and in 1992 Royce and Elaine moved to the Island after renovating their cottage as a permanent home. They then travelled east and west, wintered in Florida for many years where life-long friendships were made. Royce had the ability to connect with family, friends and anyone he met. There was always a story that he could relate to people and share experiences with his wisdom and his humour. He was a competitor in cards, golfing and curling. His woodworking skills, building furniture such as tables, cedar chests, rocking horses, etc., brought him much joy which he generously shared with family and friends. Royce was also involved in erecting and maintaining the barns at the Mindemoya Historical Museum. He loved the outdoors; hunting, fishing and making maple syrup with his sister-in-law. He truly loved his wife and family. His eyes would sparkle and he would have the biggest smile when we were all together. Royce was a hardworking man who took on many challenges to provide a very rewarding and fulfilling life for both he and his family. He leaves behind a huge hole in our hearts that we will fill with cherished memories.
