WIIKWEMKOONG—Buoyed by the success of last year’s inaugural Comicon in Wiikwemkoong, Curtis Kagige decided to up the game this year with an event to be held Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9 at the Wiikwemkoong Thunderdome (aka arena). This year the event is being billed as Wikwemicomicon’24.
Mr. Kagige may be better known as an artist and hip hop dance performer.
“I have never been to a major Comicon myself,” admitted Mr. Kagige, but he said that he was inspired by what he has seen posted online about events taking place across Turtle Island. What he wasn’t entirely prepared for was the amount of work involved in hosting such an event. Still, he remains excited about Wikwemicomicon.
This year’s event will include the ever-popular cosplay, where talented and gifted artistic individuals create costumes based on their favourite comic book characters. Registration is online at wikycosplay@gmail.com. There will be cash and prizes to be won.
Mr. Kagige said that there are still spaces for vendors, but not to wait too long as they are starting to fill up.
“This is a comic book style event,” said Mr. Kagige. “But it is open to just about any kind of pop culture event.
In addition to vendors plying their wares, the Wikwemicomicon presents an opportunity for comic book and graphic novel hobbyists to come together to trade and exchange.
Mr. Kagige said that he is trying to establish a core group that will assist in building up the event to the point where it will eventually attract visitors to his community. In the meantime, Wikwemicomicon offers an opportunity for fans to come out and enjoy themselves, mix, mingle and just have fun.
