SUDBURY—For years, the Douglas A. Smith Family Foundation has been a key supporter of Cambrian College, in particular its various business programs. In recognition of this support, Cambrian has announced that its School of Business will now be known as the Douglas A. Smith Family School of Business.
The Douglas A. Smith Family School of Business honours the legacy of the Smith family, founders of Manitoulin Transport. Launched in 1960 by Douglas A. Smith, Manitoulin Transport began with a single licence and has since grown into a global leader in transportation and logistics. The Smith family’s dedication to continuous improvement, strategic vision and hard work has been instrumental in the company’s success.
“The establishment of the Douglas A. Smith Family School of Business marks a significant moment in Cambrian College’s history and will have a huge impact on our business programs,” said Cambrian College President Kristine Morrissey.
Ms. Morrissey told The Expositor, “As president of Cambrian College, I am profoundly moved and immensely grateful for this generous contribution from the Douglas A. Smith Family Foundation. This substantial donation represents more than just financial support, it reflects a shared commitment to excellence, innovation and community development.”
“The impact of this gift will be felt across all corners of our campus,” Ms. Morrissey said. “It ensures that our students have access to the best educational tools and learning opportunities, preparing them to become the leaders of tomorrow. Moreover, it fortifies our faculty and staff by providing them with what they need to deliver world-class education in our community and beyond. On behalf of our entire college community, I would like to thank the Smith family for your belief in our mission and your investment in our community.”
“It’s an absolute pleasure to be here representing the Douglas A. Smith Family Foundation during this pivotal moment for Cambrian College and our community,” said Jeff Smith, vice-chair of Manitoulin Transport and former chair of Cambrian College’s board.
“Our foundation has a longstanding commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and strengthening community ties. This is more than a mission, it is a passion that drives many of the decisions we make,” said Mr. Smith. He explained, “The partnership between the Douglas A. Smith Family Foundation and Cambrian College is built on a base of shared values: innovation, community development, and a persistent pursuit of excellence.”
“Our collaboration is a reflection of our belief that education is a powerful catalyst for economic and social growth, particularly here in Northern Ontario, where the potential is truly immense,” continued Mr. Smith.
“Today, I am so proud to announce a significant contribution from our foundation that underscores our deep commitment to Cambrian College and its vision for the future,” said Mr. Smith.
“Our partnership with Cambrian College reflects our shared commitment to innovation and seizing opportunities,” said Mr. Smith. “It is with great pride that we extend our support to the Douglas A. Smith Family Schools of Business, championing its pioneering educational initiatives and nurturing the next generation of business leaders, who we also hope will follow in Manitoulin Transport’s entrepreneur spirit, innovation and commitment to community so they too can leave an indelible mark on the business landscape.”
The support provided to Cambrian College for the Douglas A. Smith Family Foundation includes scholarships for students entering Cambrian’s new three-year and four-year Bachelor of Business Administration degree programs, as well as unrestricted funds allocated to the School of Business and Wabnode Centre for Indigenous Student Services to address pressing needs. The Douglas A. Smith Family Foundation also supports various events, clubs, and skill competitions tied to the School of Business and the School of Skills Training, Engineering and Environmental Studies under the Manitoulin Transport brand. This support aims to enhance opportunities for skill development through work-integrated learning.
Mr. Smith noted, “We didn’t indicate how much of a donation we have made, but it is a significant contribution.” He explained, “it was just last September that Cambrian received approval to start the three and four-year Bachelor of Business Administration degree programs. Colleges are not always able to provide these degrees, but diplomas. They always had business programs but not three- or four-year business degree programs.”
Mr. Smith explained, “this donation is designed to foster an educational environment where students can excel and become the future leaders our community needs.” He explained the details of its support over the next 10 years. “Sponsorship for student clubs, recruitment initiatives and annual competitions in both the schools of business and skills training under the Manitoulin Transport brand. By funding these areas, we aim to provide students with robust opportunities to apply their learnings and gain experience in practical settings. Jill of All Trades, Skills Canada Ontario Competition, Ontario Colleges Marketing Competition, Enactus Club.”
“The development of six annual scholarships for entering Cambrian’s new innovative three and four-year Bachelor of Business Administration programs as well as two annual scholarships for female and indigenous students enrolling in the colleges truck and coach program,” continued Mr. Smith. “These scholarships will help remove financial barriers, making education accessible to more students and diversifying our future workforce.”
As well through the donation there will be annual unrestricted funds for the School of Business and the Wabnode Centre for Indigenous Student Services. This flexible funding will allow both areas to swiftly address its most immediate and pressing needs.
Dan Lessard, manager of communications for Cambrian told the Expositor, “This could be used for things like new software, equipment, cultural materials, or possibly student attendance in student cultural exchange programs.”
“Our vision goes beyond mere financial assistance; it encompasses a holistic approach to supporting Cambrian College,” said Mr. Smith. “We aim to create a nurturing environment that not only fosters academic excellence but also instills a spirit of innovation and excellence among students.”
“I extend an invitation to other potential donors and businesses in our community and beyond to join us in this important endeavour. By uniting our resources and visions, we can further enhance the educational experiences at Cambrian College, paving the way for a brighter, more prosperous future for us all,” said Mr. Smith.
“We are excited to witness the success stories that will emerge, confident that they will be as impactful and enduring as the legacy we aim to build,” said Mr. Smith.
While a company with international reach, the Manitoulin Transport Group remains deeply rooted in Northern communities, emphasizing the importance of community involvement. “We see a huge need for business professionals to create economic opportunities around the north and beyond,” said Mr. Smith. “We want graduates from the Douglas A. Smith Family School of Business to be leaders in their professions and communities.”
“Cambrian is filled with great people,” said Mr. Smith, who led a process to hire new Cambrian president Kristine Morrissey a year ago. “She has done a great job and Cambrian is very well run, the board is top shelf, and Cambrian is very well positioned for the future. Our Foundation is very pleased to be part of this.”
