Holy Moly Coyotes!
The Manitoulin Elementary Soccer Championships took place last Thursday in Wiikwemkoong for the Grade 7 ⁄ 8 Intermediates while the junior event was hosted by CMPS in Mindemoya.  The Little Current Coyotes absolutely cleaned up at both venues leaving no scraps!

At the Pontiac School, both LCPS A and B teams won their respective divisions and even met in the final game. Congratulations to players: Alexis Mousseau, Azalea Anaya, Kirsten Bowerman, Roen Dechesnes, Brooklynn Ferguson, Spencer Cortes, Collin Goodfellow, Max King, Nathan Quackenbush, Luis Anaya, Ryan Carter, Casey Bowerman, Liam Stephens, Kain Corbiere, Myla Edralin, Arabella Otosquiaiob, Mia Tomiselli, Charlotte Ziegler, Hazel Cooper, Safiyah Esquimaux, Kayla Eadie and Coach Mark Volpini

It’s track and field season!
Several Manitoulin athletes have put their training to the test already and still more attended the Nipissing Invitational last week. Coach Gerry Holliday has been back at his camp, so he can coach once again!

Congratulations to these die-hard athletes: Jack Carter, Cash Duschene-Milne, Andrew Cooper, Autumn Davy, Alan Wilkin, T.J. Green, and Brodie Pennie. Here are a few individual highlights.

Brodie, who is heading to University of New Brunswick this fall with some help from a running scholarship, demonstrated just what UNB is looking for. He won the 800, 1500 and 3000m races, and set new PBs (personal best) of 2:01 in the 800 and 4:03 in the 1500!

Alan Wilkin and T.J. Green had the unenviable task of racing against Brodie in the 800m, but turned in great performances in their own right with Alan taking third and Thomas, fifth! T.J. also took silver in the 2000mSteeplechase. Jack Carter picked up the bronze in the 100m, Autumn Davy was 4th in the 800m.

Brooke Gibeault who attends secondary school in Sudbury opened her season with more hardware. Brooke was first in the long jump and shot put and was four hundredths of a second away from a perfect score in the 100m hurdles! No worries, Brooke, you will get it before the season is over. Kudos to you all!

And single-track season, too!
Mountain biking has seen a definite resurgence in the last few years. The annual Hardwood Singletrack Classic, just south of Orillia took place two weekends ago, and a strong Manitoulin contingent made the commute. Racers had a choice of 21 or 42 km distances.

The fastest Manitoulin rider in the 21km event, at just 17 years old, Bradley Slaght finished 2nd in the 17-34 men’s category! For youth riders in the 21k event, Rachel Quackenbush finished 1st in the U12 female division, Isaac Quackenbush finished third in the 15-16 male division and Nathan Quackenbush finished 2nd in the 13-14 male division.

For adults, in the 21k event, Bill Slaght finished 8th in his age category and Hannah Brown was 7th. Finally, in the 42km event, Alex Anstice finished 6th in his age category! The team will be preparing for their own race soon enough. The Manitoulin Mountain Bike Challenge is slated for Sunday, June 9th at McLean’s Park in Assiginack. Check out the Events tab on the Breakaway Sports website.

New off-the-rock signing!
Congrats to Koda Peltier of Wiikwemkoong who had a great spring tryout with the U15 AA Nickle City Cubs and was offered a spot on this fall’s roster. Way to go, Koda!

Fight childhood Cancer!
I see a few local people have already expressed interest in this year’s Great Cycle Challenge that raises money every year to fight childhood cancers. The event stretches over 31 days in August and all ages, all fitness levels are invited and you can participate from any location.

The challenge is to get yourself to get on your bike this August and clock your kilometres over 31 days in the 2024 Great Cycle Challenge!

The set-up is easy. You set your own distance goals and ride at your own pace. You can achieve your fitness goals as you track your pedalling progress with their free app (or Strava/MapMyRide, Komoot type apps).

At this stage, all there is to do is register your interest and you will be notified when they officially launch and receive your free entry into the ride. If you don’t see it on Facebook, just type, ”great cycle challenge” into your chosen search engine.

A good sport is good for sports!
