JOEL EDWARD HILL
June 20, 1964 – August 2023
The family of Joel Hill is deeply saddened to announce his unexpected death in Calgary, Alberta in late August 2023. He passed away at home of natural causes following many years of chronic health problems. Joel was predeceased by his father, Paul Eino Hill in 2018. His step-father, Garry Ivan Lewis, passed away in December 2023. Joel is survived by his life partner Trudy Hilts; his mother Shirley Gail (McLean) Lewis; his siblings Susan (George) Young, Brian Hill and Bruce (Sherry) Hill; several nieces, nephews and other extended family members. Joel was born in Sudbury, Ontario and grew up in Whitefish with his three older siblings. He attended R.H. Murray Public School, Lively District Secondary School and Nickel District Secondary School. He went on to earn diplomas in welding and carpentry at Sault College. After college graduation, Joel worked at a variety of odd jobs including a short time in a Northern Ontario gold mine. When the mine closed in the late 1980s, he moved to Calgary to find other job opportunities. His most recent employment was at TransCanada Exteriors and Roofing where he was a senior project manager. Joel was always happiest outdoors. In his youth, he enjoyed cycling, snowmobiling and fishing, especially at Brady Lake and Little Penage Lake. Joel met Trudy in Calgary and they lived a quiet life there with their beloved dogs and cat. In the summer, Joel and Trudy enjoyed camping in the Kananaskis region of the Rocky Mountains. Joel had a green thumb and grew large quantities of vegetables in his backyard garden. He enjoyed building and repairing things. Some of his most memorable projects included building a tiny outdoor sauna, refurbishing an old camper trailer, carving new parts for a broken guitar and fitting his mountain bike with an electric motor to facilitate running errands around town. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
