Two Sea Cadets fare well at Borden biathlon

MANITOULIN—Two members of the Manitoulin Sea Cadets RCSCC 348 Manitoulin fared very well at the NOA Stage 3a Regional Run and Shoot Biathlon championship held at CFB Borden November 24-26.

Master Cadet Austin Flikweert and Ordinary Cadet Sean Simon took part in the Ontario championship. Denis Blake explained, “There were 16 teams in the junior male category, and our cadets were on one of the teams, which finished 10th overall. Absolutely this is a very good result, we are talking about an Ontario wide competition.”

“I’m sure they learned a lot at the competition,” said Mr. Blake. The cadets had to take part in a one kilometre run on the course, followed by shooting five pellets at the biathlon target (with a thirty second penalty for each miss) again running one kilometre, shooting and running one more kilometre to the finish line.

“In the winter they would be using .22 calibre rifles while in the run and shoot competition, they use air rifles,” said Mr. Blake.

To qualify for the provincials, the two local sea cadets had qualified through a competition held in Kivi Park in Sudbury in November. Ten cadet corps competed from the Sudbury area, including 348 Manitoulin Sea Cadets. In the junior male category, Master Cadet Flikweert finished third and Ordinary Cadet Simon placed sixth.
