JOHN FREDERICK COLWELL (JACK)

JOHN FREDERICK COLWELL (JACK) In loving memory of John “Jack” Frederick Colwell who passed away peacefully at Health Sciences North in Sudbury on November 20, 2023, at the age of 85. Jack was the best friend and soulmate of Patricia (Pat) (nee Campbell) for 63 years of wonderful marriage, who he met at his parents’ tourist camp (Fred’s Camp) on Lake Kagawong. Much loved father of Robert (Stacey), Randy (Sharon) and Jodilynn. Cherished grandfather of Heather (Thomas), John and Jazmin and great grandfather to Mason, Max and Jillian. Survived by sisters Shirley Cranston (late John) and Pat Smith (Mel). Brother-in-law to the late Elwood Campbell and uncle to many nieces and nephews. In his early years, Jack worked on building the road to Killarney and was among the first drivers for Manitoulin Transport. In 1966 he was hired as the foreman for the Town of Gore Bay, where he served many roles until retirement in 1996. After retirement, he frequented the Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport, where he assisted with aircraft maintenance and snow removal. In 2023 Jack was recognized for his devotion to the town and many volunteer organizations as recipient of Gore Bay’s Lifetime Achievement award. Jack was a true outdoorsman and enjoyed camping, canoeing, hunting, fishing and trapping. He was raised with an outboard motor in his hand and developed a natural love for the water. For years, together with Pat, he spent many summers at Sables Lake, enjoying the outdoors with friends and fellow campers. He was a passionate boater and enjoyed countless cruises on both his own vessels as well as those of his sons. He was a private pilot and experienced the beauty of flight in his Cessna 140 aircraft. He possessed a natural mechanical ability to build, invent and create. He and Pat also enjoyed many years of square dancing. Jack was a kind person and was always willing to help those in need. He loved to share his stories with family and friends and will be missed by all who knew him. Family and friends will gather at Simpson Funeral Home on Saturday, December 9, 2023 from 10:15 am until the service at 12 pm with Rev. Janice Frame officiating. Burial will follow in Gordon Cemetery in the spring. Donations may be made to the Mindemoya Hospital Auxilary. Please share your thoughts, memories and photos at www.simpsonfuneralhome.ca.
