Regina Brett is an award-winning feature columnist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and she has made the finalist list for the Pulitzer Prize twice. Brett would probably not dwell on these accolades too much as one of her best-known quotes is: “Don’t take yourself too seriously—nobody else does.” Her book, ‘God Never Blinks,’ has a subtitle that describes the book perfectly: ‘50 Lessons for Life’s Little Detours.’ This collection of essays is very personal, often humourous and most definitely insightful. It is a good read for anyone who has been through difficult times, and we all have been there at one time or another.

Malcolm Gladwell is a writer for the New Yorker magazine and has been a reporter for the Washington Post. His book, ‘Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking’ examines the decisions that we make in a moment—literally ‘in the blink of an eye’—most of which are not as casual as they may seem. ‘Blink’ will alter the way that you interpret every choice that you make. It is a new way of thinking about thinking!

Historical fiction doesn’t get much better than, ‘The Dress Lodger’ by author Sheri Holman. The novel is set in 1831, in a small quarantined English city. Cholera is raging and rampant throughout the country. The story is told through the eyes of a diverse cast of characters, all trapped within the epidemic-riddled city walls. This novel alternates between caring and compassionate to shocking and startling—a story of people linked through affluence and poverty, acceptance and rejection, grace and condemnation—a beautifully written book!

Adriana Trigani’s book, ‘The Shoemaker’s Wife’ is a splendid novel that chronicles the adventures and misadventures of two young lovers. This life drama is set at the turn of the 20th century and winds its way from Italy to America. It is a tale of renown, war, tragedy, family and fated love. All of which bring the story to its final destiny. Trigani is a wonderful storyteller!

Young Adult Pick: ‘Road Trip’ by authors Gary Paulsen and Jim Paulsen.

DVD Pick: ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ starring Martin Freeman, Ian Holm, Cate Blanchett and Elijah Wood. This is the first of three films that will prequel J.R.R. Tolkein’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ series. The film has lots of action!
