Letters: A call for public meeting on potential ER closures

Knowing the challenges will set the tone for informed public session

To the Expositor:
The hearing of the recent decision to close the Mindemoya Hospital emergency department for a considerable number of days, yet to be announced, is of great concern to all people on the Island.

We would urge you to hold a public meeting so that we can be informed by our professional health leaders and Boards, our MPP and MP of the facts, statistics used, and challenges that our province, Northern Ontario and specifically our Mindemoya Hospital currently face which led them to believe that closure of our emergency department is the only option.

Knowing the details of our challenges will set the tone for an informed public session. We believe that together we can find solutions that will help to create a resilient, effective community package, showcasing the largest freshwater island in the world to young doctors as a hard-to- resist place in which to live and safely work.

We urge you to invite to this meeting the hard-working and resilient residents who have a strong desire to help, regardless of our low population numbers, in order to together find an Island solution and to avoid failing to serve our community as the only option.

The hospital board and our municipality must do everything they can to serve the needs of our community.

Let us be of informed help.

Sincerely,

Maja Mielonen and concerned citizens
Mindemoya
