Manitoulin Secondary School golfers qualify for North Ontario championship

M’CHIGEENG—The Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) Mustangs boys golf team has won the North Shore Secondary School Association (NSSSA) championship for the third year in a row. And three members of the MSS girls’ team will also be moving on to the Northern Ontario championship.

“Our boys team won the overall NSSSA championship for the third year in a row,” said Jordan Smith, coach of the MSS golf team. The NSSSA championship was held at Huron Pines Golf and Country Club in Blind River on September 19. He explained the boys’ team was made up of 10 players with the top five players scores counting toward the team aggregate score.

Mustang Noah Thorpe was first overall winning the boys’ division by five strokes over his nearest rival. He posted an 18-hole score of 75. Teammate Rylan Carrick was third overall with a score of 81, while the three other Mustang golfers that also posted good scores and will make up the team going to the Northern Ontario championship will include Eli Lock, Corbin Best and Jack Carter.

Mr. Smith pointed out in both the boys’ and girls’ division all golfers are in the open division, meaning they are playing against golfers from Grade 9-12.

In the girls’ division, MSS golfer Amy Smith (a Grade 10 student) tied for first place overall, with a score of 107. Ava Corbiere was second overall with a score of 108, and she and Saraya Eshkwakogan, who shot 110, have all qualified as individuals to move on.

The Northern Ontario Secondary School Association championships will take place at Lively Golf Course in Sudbury this week.
