Hello! Team Fergmeijer here, your local pun laureates. We don’t know how you feel, but in our experience, bridge puns really hold up. Of course, there is one convoluted metaphor for bridges that aren’t built well that we refuse to include here. It’s just too hard to get across well. As you may know, the bridge along the river trail was broken some time ago. It was so shocking, we still can’t get over it. It wasn’t clear if it was damaged on purpose: there’s no concrete evidence of it being deliberate.
Lookout! Repairs are being made on the Old Mill Road bridge. The bridge is scheduled to be closed Tuesday, September 12 and Friday, September 15. Please use Graham Hill and Newburn Road as a detour.

A special evening market is being held in Kagawong on Saturday, September 16 from 4 to 9 pm at the Park Centre. Stop in and check out the vendors, food, cabanas, and even a fire pit to ward off that autumnal evening chill. We hear nearby shops will be open as well. Don’t miss out!

Fresh community gossip! Did you hear there was a stickup on the Old Mill Road bridge? Turns out some kid threw it up there.
The Billings Library is officially back to its winter hours. They are open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 pm to 7 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm. The landfill continues on its summer hours until the end of October: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 pm to 6 pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm.
Happy birthday wishes go out to Jamie W and Kim B. We aren’t sure what you got up to for your big days, but if it involved a party at the ice creamery, we bet it was gelato fun!
Just around the corner, the 4elements Living Arts annual Elemental Festival will be September 23rd and 24th in Kagawong. Come out and celebrate the beauty, bounty and history of Mnidoo Mnising through workshops and performances on singing and dancing, an artisan and food vendor market, artistic workshops, a children’s pop-up play area, and a special dinner and performance event. This week’s Meldrum Bay News actually covers two weeks. I was away last week and couldn’t submit the news.
The Meldrum Bay Potluck Dinner on Sunday, August 27th went really well. Not only was the food fantastic but it was a really great get-together. Afterwards we had a service at the church which was very enjoyable.
At cards on the 27th there were four tables. High lady was Brenda Carter with 78 points. High man was Bob Benedict with 78 points. Ladies’ lone hands went to Sara-Lyn Arnot with 3 and men’s lone hands went to Tom Rumley with 3. Doug Carter had most euchres with 9. Karen Noble brought home the juice. The money jar is still safe.
Last week there was a lasagna and pork tenderloin dinner at the hall in Silver Water but we were invited out to another dinner the same night. Rick loves lasagna, so we went early and paid our money and brought home two dinners that went into the fridge for the next day. The evening out was wonderful. The next day we enjoyed our meal we had brought home from Silver Water. Delicious! If you can help it, never pass up a lasagna/pork tenderloin dinner in Silver Water.
Karen Noble had a birthday and we all sang happy birthday to her at cards the Friday night before.
This week in Meldrum Bay the work on the waterfront has continued. Quantum is doing a good job and I think that the area that they are working on looks very nice. It was greatly needed because high water levels over the last few years had eroded the banks a great deal. Reinforcement and finishing touches are completed. Now, the new docks have arrived and are sitting near the boat ramp waiting to be put in place next week. Thanks to everyone for their hard work. Friday, September 1 at cards we all had a really great time. There were three tables and one sit out. High lady was Mildred Kelly with 68 points. High man was Tom Rumley with 69 points. Ladies’ lone hands went to Myra with 76 points and 5 lone hands. Men’s lone hands went to Bob Benedict with 73 points and 5 lone hands. Most euchres went to Rick Bradley with 8. Harold Rogers brought home the juice. Once again the money jar is safe.
We have some sad news to report. Last week many of the locals would have noticed Rick Bradley manning the dump rather than our usual man, Dave. He had been called away because his father was very ill. We are sorry to have heard about the passing of Arthur James Hansford, father of Dave Hansford (Chainsaw Dave), on September 4, 2023. He was in his 90th year. The whole community of Meldrum Bay extends our condolences to Dave on the loss of his father.
The apples are ripening. The leaves are turning colour. The birds are flocking. It’s sad to think that summer is wrapping up but the season is truly beautiful.

Helen Scott from St. Catharines visited Enid and Scott Runnalls last week.
Natalie and Roger Hayden from Lively were over on the weekend and visited their parents.
On Tuesday the Millers/Lane-Rock/Runnalls families entertained the Filipino nurses from Manitoulin Lodge Nursing Home. They enjoyed the lake and wiener roast. We enjoyed the young women and their love for our community and wanting to know and understand our ways.

Friday, Sepember 1 a few of us met at the community hall to set tables and make salads. The afternoon was spent making pies and cheesecake. Friday evening, we went to Meldrum Bay for euchre.
Friday afternoon, John Jagt went to South Baymouth to pick up his seven-year-old grandson, Remington Jagt. John returned to South Baymouth the next day to meet his son and return Remington.
Saturday morning a market was held in our yard. Lori Mastelko brought her knitting and sewing. Jose Daniels brought lots of produce, including the first cantaloupes. I bought one of those and it was fantastic.We are also selling preserves for Jean Steeves.
Saturday evening we held a dinner at the community hall. Thank you to the 85 people who attended. Thank you to the volunteer workers, including three teenagers from Joe Addison’s cottage. They had endless energy and learned fast. The best part is that they agreed to volunteer again when they are here.
Monday was my birthday. Thank you to everyone who sent wishes and gifts.
Tuesday afternoon, Gladys Duncanson and I went to Gore Bay to do errands. I went to the Raven’s Roost to check out the sales. There were quite a few customers and lots of items left for sale.
Wednesday afternoon I went for a short swim. When the rain started to sprinkle, I got out. It stopped before I got in the car. As I drove home, I noticed the road became very wet not far from the lake. When I got home, Albert told me it had poured rain part of the time I was gone.
Thursday morning, I packed up my Avon orders. The UCW meeting was in the afternoon at St. Andrew’s United Church. We had quite a few people and heard interesting happenings from the summer. There are plans to have a Christmas market at our house on Saturday, October 28 at which the UCW ladies will have baking and crafts for sale.
After the meeting, I went to Gore Bay to do my Avon deliveries. The road construction from the bridge in Evansville to the police station in Gore Bay is ongoing. I got home in time to eat supper and go to the hall for euchre. There were six tables of players.
Charles and Lynn Pickard have sold their house as of September 8. They are staying with DonnaKay and Doug McDonald until their apartment is ready in Sudbury.
Helen Black told us that she and Brian have sold their place in Meldrum Bay and bought a house close to Gore Bay.
