OPP requesting publics assistance, information in fatal crash
The Manitoulin detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is requesting the public’s assistance regarding a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in Robinson Township.
Shortly after 12 am on August 18 the Manitoulin OPP responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Silver Lake Road in Robinson. The driver and only occupant of the vehicle, a 53-year-old man from Dawson Township, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Expositor confirmed the driver of the vehicle was Rene Lampi.
The OPP investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the Northeast Region traffic incident management and enforcement (TIME) Team.
The Manitoulin OPP is seeking the public’s assistance with information regarding the involved vehicle, a silver Honda CRV, or any interactions with the driver of the vehicle that may have been observed in Gore Bay, Meldrum Bay or travelling along Highway 540 on August 18.

Impaired driver arrested and charged
On Sunday, August 20 at approximately 2:30 am, officers with the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service (WTPS) were on patrol in the main village of Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory (WUT).
While travelling the main village area officers were almost struck head on by an oncoming motor vehicle. Officers immediately turned around, activated police vehicle emergency lights and conducted a traffic stop.
Officers spoke to the driver who showed some signs of impairment. Police asked the suspect driver to provide a roadside breath sample to which they agreed. The driver provided a breath sample, registered a failure, and was subsequently placed under arrest by police. The driver was transported by officers to the police office where breath tests were conducted.
A 45-year-old male resident of Wiikwemkoong was charged with operation while impaired and operation over 80 mgs.
The accused was later released and is to appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Wiikwemkoong on September 19 to answer to the charges.
WTPS hires an unprecedented six new officers
Throughout the month of July and August the WTPS conducted several interviews for the position of police constable with the service.
As a result of the interviews six new officers were hired and will be attending the Ontario Police College in Aylmer this September.
This marks the first time in WTPS history that six recruits will be attending the Ontario Police College at the same time.
The WTPS welcomes Raven Manitowabi, Brylin Hacking-Schwan, Justin Godin, Dale Recollet, Olivia Manitowabi and Sierra Pangowish.
