NOHA changes significant rule!
As Manitoulin minor hockey associations will begin the ramp up their fall registrations for the upcoming season, there may be an added wrinkle to their numbers. At the AGM in May, the NOHA (Northern Ontario Hockey Association) voted, after a heavy and long debate, to remove releases! Traditionally, for instance, if a player from Manitowaning wanted to play in Little Current he needed a written ‘release’ from their home association in Manitowaning. Now, they can simply register in Little Current and the release is done internally by NOHA! The idea of ‘asking’ permission from the home association has long been the source of occasional difficulties.
Of course it was heavily debated at the NOHA because smaller associations argued that kids would go to the larger associations, thus leaving them without teams. On Manitoulin, fortunately, the MMHA works together, trying to ensure a child isn’t stuck playing where they don’t want to. The Manitoulin Minor goal, of course, is to get the kids on the ice having fun and getting exercise.
Now speaking of Manitoulin MHA, I have word that Mike Zegil (president) and Jackie White (secretary) finished their term last May, and MMS hasn’t filled those spots yet and they do of course need to be filled!
