MINDEMOYA—On July 26, Summer (Chatwell) Seguin, who is originally from Gore Bay, along with members of her family and friends presented a donation in the amount of $11,000 to the Mindemoya Hospital in honour of her late husband Shawn Seguin.
“Shawn left a lasting impression everywhere he went and made everyone feel special,” said Ms. Seguin. “He would be so honoured to know that even after his death, his legacy lives on.”
For 22 years, Shawn Seguin considered Manitoulin Island his second home after meeting and marrying his wife, Summer. Last year, Mr. Seguin passed away in a tragic accident. “He was always one to lend a helping hand to any one in need in any way he could.” So Ms. Seguin, along with their two sons, family and friends decided to honour his memory by giving back to a cause close to home.
Throughout the year, Ms. Seguin’s sister had been undergoing cancer treatments and travelling to Sudbury for care due to renovations taking place at the Mindemoya Hospital. Ms. Seguin decided to raise money in order to enhance the chemotherapy upgrades at the hospital in hopes of providing comfort and making the experience just a little easier for local residents.
On May 20, a memorial celebration and fundraiser took place at Summer’s home in Caledonia where 50 Manitoulin residents were in attendance.
Ms. Seguin, along with family and friends presented the cheque for $11,000 in memory of Shawn Seguin to Paula Fields, president and chief executive officer of the Manitoulin Health Centre (MHC) and MHC board chair Dennis McGregor.
“This is so amazing, thank you,” stated Ms. Fields. “And this is so timely.” She explained the MHC has recently completed the renovations on its emergency department and it is expected the chemotherapy renovations will be complete this fall.
“On behalf of the (MHC) board of directors, I would like to thank all of you very much,” added Mr. McGregor.
