Young person arrested for attempted murder in Wiikwemkoong

A young person has been arrested with attempted murder after stabbing and pepper spraying two residents of Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory (WUT) following a disturbance at a residence on Mshaaboos Lane.

On July 21, shortly after 6:30 pm, members of the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service (WTPS) and the Manitoulin detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a disturbance on Mshaaboos Lane. The complainant could hear a male and female screaming.

Upon arrival, police found two people suffering from stab wounds and the effects of bear spray. The suspect had fled the scene. The victims were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and later released.

As a result of the investigation, a 16-year-old person of WUT, who cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been arrested and charged with: theft under $5,000, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, assault with a weapon, utter threat, -cause death or bodily harm, attempt to commit murder, aggravated assault and assault a peace officer.

The accused was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay in July.

The Manitoulin OPP Crime Unit, East Algoma OPP Crime Unit, Northeast Region OPP Forensic Identification Services and WTPS are continuing the investigation.

Second stabbing incident in two days being investigated

On Thursday, July 20, at approximately 4:30 am, the WTPS responded to an ambulance assistance call on Wikwemikong Way on the WUT.

While on scene, police were advised of a second incident involving a male stabbing victim. It was reported that a 31-year-old male resident of Wikwemikong Way had been transported to hospital with a stab wound. The injury was non-life threatening. The two stabbing incidents were unrelated.

The investigation revealed that there was an assault that had taken place at the residence on Wikwemikong Way and that the suspect had fled prior to police arrival. WTPS actively patrolled that area with negative results in locating the suspect.
